I got this shot of this little guy at Valle Vidal, which is in northern New Mexico. The series Longmire was filmed here when Sheriff Longmire was at his cabin. I took it with my Fuji X-T3 and my 55-200 mm lens.

I'm inclined to think this may be a ground squirrel of some sort. Cute little guys that can carry Bubonic Plague among other parasite transported diseases. None the less it is a nice shot of an interesting animal.

That could be. My dad used to call them ground hogs, but you may be correct. There were a bunch up there to watch. The grandkids really got a kick out of them. Thanks.

Sure looks like a ground hog, or as we called them when I was a kid, ground chuck because they were all over the highways and looked like, ground chuck.

Prairie dogs are generally not as big bodied as this fellow.

This is likely a Rock squirrel.
Citellus variegatus.
Ground hog, Marmota monax, range much north and east of NM.
Nothing else similar in NM.

I must need glasses.
In download you can see a white tail tip, so Whitetailed prairie dog, Cynomys gunnisoni.
Range fits, as does description and illustration.
