I've always been interested (and have a graduate degree) in architecture. I've wanted to photograph all 50 state capitol buildings, but will never get to all of them. How about you hoggers in the US adding to my start and see how many we can get. (Canadian provincial capitols, also.)

Heres a beginning, Olympia WA, Monpelier VT and Charleston WV.

If you ever get to Texas, visit the state capital in Austin. I think it's one of the most beautiful that I've seen.

I've heard that about Austin and hope a Texan will grab her/his "gun," get on his/her horse and shoot it. And, I'm looking forward to your pix from Raleigh.

How about the Capital Building in Washington, D.C? I have that, although it has been turned into a painting in photoshop.

Tennessee, built between 1843-1859 and the only capital building to have its architect entombed in the northeast wall.

I'm struck by the sameness of the architecture.

So was I, so I googled the question. There are only 8 state capitols that don't look similar. Most are like copies of the Washington DC building. Hawaii's was really different when it was the iolani Palace for a long time. Now it looks like any business park building.

Here is the Iolani Palace. Hate that the front view was no better, but we were not allow that day to get to the good location. I was lucky that my tour was an experiment to see if people could take photos inside with NO flash. My group did well, but the next group used flash and the camera ban was reinstated. If anyone would like a copy of the interior photos I made, send me a PM please. Interesting architecture and history. The current capital building is YUK IMHO.

It's what I expected. The national capitol is based on Roman ceremonial architecture and so are most state caps.

However, before we went Roman, this was Washington (state's) second capitol building, built after the first, wooden one burned down. It's a unique design, based on neo-Gothic architecture popular for college campuses at the time. (The kids on the lawn are conducting a yoga class.)

Please post a couple interior shots. I always try to get some while touring a building, and seldom resort to flash. (That's what high ISOs are for.)
