Sony announced this 61MP full frame camera yesterday which should be available in September. According to the information presented it is a complete new camera not just an upgrade.

It is 26 MP in the crop mode which is the highest MP at this time. It seems to cover the bases for landscape, wild life, studio, etc. genres. Priced at $3500 its in line with many of the other camera makers' new releases.

I'm mildly interested and waiting for the reviews. My main concern is the large files and how they will impact the computer/processing.

My A7R II @ 42 MP creates 80 MB RAW files. If you pushed the A7R IV to its full pixel shifted 245+/- MP, the file size would probably be about 450-475 MB. I remember a time when we ran a whole business with two 300 MB hard drives!!

But the 26 MP in crop mode is sure attractive.

It is not enough to make me leave my 7R3 or 7RM3. I will let others work out the kinks.

Don't be seduced by the 61 MP idea..... ask yourself whether this will REALLY provide significantly better pictures than those you get with your current equipment. Not to mention other potential limitations that others have already brought up on this forum.

Tony Northrup could not complete his review because of problems with the camera he was sent. The YouTube video is worth watching for features he said are missing

The awesome thing about the mark IV coming out soon is the mark III, still an awesome camera, is going to drop in price. I would love to have the mark IV, but would much rather have the extra cash for the 12-24mm G Master. I rented the lens a while back and really didn't want to send it back.

I have a question about the LENS REQUIREMENTS to obtain the quality potential of the A7R4. Exactly what lenses are going to provide the resolution and contrast that this 61MP sensor can fully record? It looks to me like you can immediately forget about using current glass, so this will have to be considered in the initial upgrade, not just the body.

To get the full 61MP from this sensor one would need a near perfect lenses, which do not exist. However, any lens you currently use will produce sharper results on this camera compared to your current camera. Check out DXOMark to confirm what I'm saying.

Not all shooters will benefit from this camera but some will. I have been chasing pixels since 2003 so I know what the potential benefits are.

True and not all that unusual for preproduction cameras. Just look at Nikon's track record on new releases.

He did mention that a borrowed camera from Manny Ortis worked just fine. The cameras were hand assembled and not representative of production. Sony has some work to do between now and September.

I don't shoot video so the missing features won't bother me.

Hi Joe, good points,

the Sony introduction looks really great - but...
The new Sony high MP model is touching the base of medium format cameras.
Even the prices, right?

At $3500 I don't think so.

Normally I shoot compressed raw files (42 MB) which are easily handled by my computer. This morning I switched to uncompressed to get a feel for the larger files. At 83 MB there was barely a noticeable increase in processing time. I got lucky when selecting the components for this custom computer (I'm not a computer geek).

That fear aside I may preorder and keep the 7R3 until the 7R4 has proven itself in my hands.

I like the detail of the larger files and will keep that setting for awhile. Images attached.
