The one in Evansville, IN closed in a dying mall after many decades. Just not enough traffic after a new, larger mall opened in town. SAD

Lowes bought the Craftsman tool line and have them on sale this month.

You are wrong. Lowes does not own Craftsman. Stanley Black & Decker bought Craftsman from Sears in 2017. Stanley Black & Decker owns many tool lines including DeWalt, Porter-Cable, Mac Tools, Irwin, and many more. They manufacture tools worldwide. Of recent they have brought manufacturing of some lines (particularly DeWalt) back to the USA to shorten the supply chain and better control quality. A plant in Connecticut is now making DeWalt top of the line cordless tools. The highly regarded commercial Porter-Cable tools have pretty much been left alone are still constructed many of metal.
Black & Decker knows all to well about degrading a product line. They did it themselves in the late 70’s when they put their name on cheap consumer tools and appliances (think drip coffee makers). Their commercial tools always remained high quality, but they damaged their name. Ergo, introducing the DeWalt line.
It appears, at this point, SB&D is getting the product and the name out to the public again. In my opinion, that sometime in the future, they will introduce a high end Craftsman tool line probably made in the USA. Accomplishing this will be not be easy. If they do, it will involve a whole new plant with the latest forging technology and metallurgy to produce the strong thin tools of years ago. We Craftsman fans can only hope:)
AND, yes, I still have all the Craftsman tools I accumulated from from 1965 and still use them today!

Try your locally owned ACE Hardware, first. The Big Boxes don't need to be the "default" first stop.

Yup. Being in the industry myself, your comments pretty well sums it all up.
Tool manufacturing is now in the hands of one major company calling the shots, and setting the standards.

At the ACE near me the prices are far far inflated vs Lowe's and HD. Also the quality of the ACE branded items is generally much lower, bordering on bad.
That's just my opinion regarding the local store, hopefully you will have better luck but I doubt it.

Second mistake I've made this year. Seriously, thank you for the correction.

Thank God I have all the tools I need, 96% Craftsman. Does Lowes sell Craftsman now? Just in case?

Lowe's does sell Craftsman. Whether or not the replacement guarantee on sockets, etc still applies I don't know. I have a Craftsman electric drill my Father purchased when I was a wee tyke, over 70 years ago. It needs, I think, the commutator turned. Would have been fun to have taken it to a "real" Sears store and ask for repair....!

Like Tennessee Earney Ford use to say, I own my soul to the company store. My parents. Every thing we bought came From Sears.
