This is strange. I bought two sink strainers for a new kitchen sink. The sink I finally bought needed just one strainer, so I want to return one. Amazon gave me several choices. I can bring the strainer into town to the UPS store. They will box it, print a label, and ship it - no cost to me. Or, I can put it into a box of my own, print a label, and drop it into a UPS pick-up box. That would cost me $5.99. Although this seems strange, easy returns are one reason why I don't hesitate to order from Amazon.
Recently returned stuff to Amazon, I repacked it in the orgininal packaging, attached the Amazon-provided label and dropped it off at the UPS Store.
Another time, I had two items to return. (One was defective, the other didn't work with my computer.) Packed both in a single package. Included both RMA documents. Took to UPS Store. Both times, simple & free.

I have returned many items to Amazon. I have always printed a free return shipping label and either driven to the UPS store (1.5 miles) or left in the mailroom of my condo complex and picked up by UPS. We have deliveries everyday and they will always pick up a return package.
I may have a clue as to which method you chose, Jerry!

One of the issues with the great service we get from Amazon is if
the purchase is small sending it back doesnt always make sense.
But think about. You can find strainers, the right filter for your frig etc.
I hated going to stores. Some people like to run to Home Depot not me.
On the downside this Amazon is having a huge effect on our economy
and stores who sell retail. Time will tell how this effects us.

Amazon is "the" answer to numerous items I simply cannot find any longer in the retail stores.
What used to be sold over-the-counter is no longer available....so we are forced to order "on line".
Progress I suppose. Amazon is richer than Walmart now. Bezos was a genius and richer than God.
Kohl’s has partnered with Amazon as a return location.

Occasionally, for low cost items, that didn’t do the trick, Amazon refunded the money and told me I could keep the item or donate it or anything else.

That happened with me last week with a $12 item from China. What I received wasn't what was pictured.

Yes, you probably guessed that I was going to drive it back to Amazon. It will make a great cross country road trip!
What was nice about this return is that it won't cost me anything. In the past, if it was simply my decision to return an item, I had to pay the postage.

Our neighborhood ACE hardware has almost everything I need, and saves a trip to Home Depot. They are very friendly and always well staffed.

Did the local hardware store not have a sink strainer?

In San Francisco we have a couple Amazon Go stores. You can drop off returns there, no need to ship.

I recently return a small item(abt. $7.00) without any prepacking to UPS, they scanned the printed return voucher gave me a receipt for it and by the time I returned home my account was credited for the return. Time UPS to back home about 35 minutes.

Around here (Long Island, NY) many 7-11’s have Amazon Lockers outside. You arrange to return the item with Amazon and they give you a code for the combination to unlock the box and you put your return item in it.
