Portage is about 45 miles south of Anchorage along the Seward Hwy, and the lake and glacier area sits off the road about 7 or 8 miles. About half way in there is a bridge over a salmon spawning stream, and when the reds (sockeye salmon) are in, there is a great viewing area off the side of the road. You can see lots of the bright red salmon with their very green heads.

thanks for the up date. I was in Anchorage from 83 to 88 so got to see it when the glacier was front and center.
