I saw Adorama has a Nikon d500 100 year anniversary edition camera for $1300 more than a standard d500. What's so special about it and is the higher price worth it?

In my humble opinion it is a marketing ploy. Not worth to me $1300 for D500 Anniversary Edition. Features Special 100th anniversary metallic gray finish and unique serial number
Includes premium Italian leather strap and metal travel case

Years back I bought a Nikon Special Edition camera which in addition to being priced higher, added $500 to the price as a donation to a cancer camp for kids. I think the camp was sponsored by Imus. The limited edition didn't sell well and Nikon send refunds for what they had added for having a numbered camera. Eventually Habitat for Humanity got the camera.

It’s worth it if you want to own the anniversary edition.

Stan, you are a decent guy and a positive UHH contributor.
I would have told the OP “read. the. darn. ad.”, but maybe he/she is actually blind.

The 100 year anniversary edition of the D500 will have the anniversary message printed on the camera. And that is the only difference between that and the regular D500. (OH, it also comes in a SPECIAL box)
Is it worth the price? IMHO, NO. Unless your a collector. And if you live another 100 years, if might be worth what you paid for it. If you cannot live that long, then you'll never get your money back on it, especially if you use it. Once used, the price will drop, FAST.

It's a collector's item, and it will quadruple in value in as few years.

It's a slightly different color, has a special logo, and also a special body cap - and the metal case. Those "features" will be worth the extra cost to some people. Still, it's hard justifying a price that's almost double the standard price.

Your quote, "It's a collector's item, and it will quadruple in value in as few years". Is not only misleading it is also very FALSE. Before you posted you should investigate what other Nikon anniversary editions are selling for from the past. Answer, NOT MUCH more than regular editions. In fact, in many cases, they are selling for a lot less than they originally sold for. So much for your fake news.

Did you actually see the smiley face at the end of Jerry’s comment?

If you could spell “facetious” and knew what the work meant, you might have saved yourself a few blood pressure points and a rant. Just sayin’

The latest technology and the quality of that technology is what sells now, and not stickers on an anniversary edition anything. Think about it. When you put your hard-earned shekels on the counter, do you want bragging rights to an "anniversary/limited edition" anything or a camera that will record the very best image?

Remember, in the end, they will produce as many "anniversary/limited editions" of anything that they can sell.
OK, the Smokey and the Bandit Pontiac TransAm are the exception, grin.

Smile,

Olympic marked F-1's used fetch very high prices. So used does affect the selling price but if used and not abused will still go up considerably in value.

Best answer!! It sure is, the digital cameras don't hold value nearly as well as film cameras did (opinion) as they pump out replacements/upgrades too often. If you don't believe me hit up any of the re-seller sites that give instant quote and see what they say about a "pristine, like new, Mint, low/minimal shutter count and accessories" model of any recent models, then e-mail or call them to discuss the low quote, besides a declining market, the used market is flooded with recent vintage bodies of all makes and models. Eye Opener. Down the road that AnnVerse model might get an extra 10-15% at best. But if it is important to the purchaser, buy it and enjoy it.
