No, I understand there were two major hacking events, in 2016 and 2018. Not sure of the details but there is a lot of info available. One of them was 68,000,000 passwords...

Anything that you want to keep reasonably secure in Dropbox should be in a secure vault using something like Truecrypt or Cryptainer etc.

I created a spreadsheet to save all of my information. It is saved on a thumb drive that I store in a special place. Works great.

I have been using the free version of Last Pass for several years now with no complaints. It does use a master password but I keep mine on paper in a safe place. It is extremely simple to use and unobtrusive in use.

Good password management apps like 1Password encrypt their vaults. Personally, I see no reason to double encrypt. TrueCrypts is discontinued. Many are best for encrypting disks, not individual files. For individual files, I use the free, easy-to-use, highly rated Mac/Windows "Encrypto", https://macpaw.com/encrypto

You are correct - I meant Veracrypt.

I have various encrypted volumes in which I keep scanned docs, financial info, and Roboform data. Use of them is almost invisible to me and adds another layer of security. Given that my entire documentary & financial life is stored electronically, that seems a reasonable approach.

My start up procedure is easy:

- Start the PC & turn on coffee maker
- log onto Windows with a secure finger print reader
- Veracrypt opens automatically, access all vaults by typing in one complex password
- Roboform starts automatically, log on with a finger print.

Total time: Less than 40 seconds from first finger scan.

Done for the day and reasonably secure.

I've been using LastPass for several years and have been very happy with it. The master password must be eight characters minimum and can't be your email. I use the premium version on three computers and two cell phones. It's great only having to remember one password. I believe it will import your passwords from another password program. You can try it for free.

I have mine stored in a little book. If you are not in a public space this is OK. Mine is also in a foreign language as much a possible.

I have tried searching on this topic, but it throws up hundreds of messages which don't seem to be relevant at all. The question also involves form filling and login control.

I have been using RoboForm for *many* years, with no real issues. Then they released a new version... This version requires the setting of a master password, which (despite claims to the contrary!) has to be entered every time I want to access a login. Just to be even more of a pain, they want to control just how long/random this master password is... The reason for using the program is that I can't remember passwords, so this kinda defeats itself. I live alone, and if some stranger has access to my PC, I have a lot more to worry about than them figuring out my passwords! I could write it on a sticky note posted on the monitor, but doesn't that seem kind-of pointless?

I ignored their pleas to upgrade for a couple of years, but the old version doesn't run with Edge, and I am having issues with IE not being accepted for some sites. Now, remember that I have *hundreds* of sites/logins stored in this thing.

I decided to bite the bullet, and upgrade, despite my misgivings. So, I created a master password in the old version, and ran the upgrade. It prompts me for the master password, which I copy&paste into the field, to be told that it is not correct. I didn't mistype it, it was copied from the initial installation into the old program!

Tech support are being totally useless. I have been told to "sync it to another account", but I only have one account. I tried creating a new account, but when I give it my email address, it says that this is already in use... I ***** know it's in use, it's ME! When I sent a message about this, they said use *this* link to delete it, and then upgrade it on my computer... Is this not what I have been trying to do?

Despite the horrendous size of the task, I am considering changing to a new program. I have heard of LastPass, and LogMeIn, but have no knowledge of either of these. So, I decided to throw myself on the mercy of UHH and ask for recommendations.

Thank you for sticking with this long enough to read it. If you *didn't* then please don't send a reply saying I should replace my PC, or change to Nikon, or anything else irrelevant. There is a huge amount of knowledge on this site, but a ton of people who reply without reading the question first...

Thanks in advance...

Maybe just use a browser that automatically maintains a login/password databases such as Opera or Chrome... Simple and works!

I have used quite a few, but my favorite os 1Password. It also syncs everything between my iPhone, my iPad, and my wife’s Android phone.

Hope your house doesn't burn down. For me, it's was areal possibility when I evacuated from the Santa Rosa fire. Thousands other were not so lucky. Privately usiing a computer/smartphone in a public place is a different problem/solution (e.g. VPN).

Do you access hundreds of different internet sites, each of which requires logging on with a password? Given the advice from security experts not to use the same password for different sites, how, without password management software, is a person supposed to remember each site’s password?

This software, and others like it, stores all of your internet credentials encrypted on the makers servers so that you don't have to remember them all. With such a manager installed, when you go to a web site that is recognized it provides your login credentials. The one I use, LastPass will even "click" the button to complete the login operation.

I use a lot of sites that require login and the software saves me a lot of time.

You are lucky. My 1Password encrypted vault has >930 passwords, software lic#s, etc. My passwords are long, unique, impossible to remember due to length an complexity. I don't have to type any of them, only a few keystrokes needed. Handy & secure. Many passwords are compromised not by the user, but by the companies where they are stored. Using the same/similar passwords is not safe.
