Not bad but Krupa was always better.
Thanks, enjoyed Buddy Rich's drum solo very much. And he's much older in this video too.
Saw him do this in person years ago. Fantastic!

Even Gene Krupa acknowledged that Buddy was a better drummer. They were both great, but when it came to pure drumming skills, Buddy was the best in a big band setting. Here's a conversation between the two:

I think Buddy was one of the best Big band swing style drummers for pure entertainment. I also think Joe Morello was a superior technical jazz style drummer. Nothing taken from Buddy. He was one the greats.

Lots of great drummers in jazz:
Sonny Greer, Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Paul Motian, Jack Dejohnette, Tony Williams and others. However, by most critics and polls, Buddy was the best.

Simply the best there ever was, period, end of story. Joe Morello remains my favorite drummer, but that doesn’t men he was better than Buddy Rich. Roy Haines is till doing it, in his 90s and is still the best dressed guy in the room, but he’s not better than Buddy Rich. There used to be a club on the ground floor of the Empire State Building, the Riverboat, if I remember correctly. I went to see Buddy Rich there and at one point during the set, Ed Shaughnessy who wasn’t exactly a novice on drums (you may remember him with the Tonight Show Band) walks by mumbling out loud, “I don’t believe this guy. I’m looking at him and I still can’t believe it.”

Good anecdote, Frank. Unquestionably the greatest!

What would you expect? Gene Krupa was a gentleman. Buddy Rich was an a..hole! He had the disposition of a wolverine and the tact an diplomacy of (you name it). My choice of the three best jazz drummers of my lifetime so far? In
alphabetical order: Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Buddy Rich. Between the three who is best? Pick a day and time.

You are absolutely right about Buddy’s disposition and personality. However, we were speaking of drumming skills and ability. There is no debate among jazz critics and musicians. Buddy wins!!

There's also style, and in my opinion Mr. Krupa has 100 times the style of Mr. Rich, which again in my opinion makes him the better drummer or at least the one I prefer to listen to.
