I left S Dakota at 4am and drove to Wyoming to catch the Devils Tower at dawn.

I love this picture of the Devil's Tower. Being shot in early morning light really brings out the detail and subtle color of the rock. You found a really good vantage point to take the picture since most photographs of the Devil's Tower seem to be shot closer to the Tower and at a lower elevation with the camera pointed up towards the Tower. After seeing your photograph, I'm gonna have to dig out my DVD of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' - one of my all time favorite movies.
For me there is nothing like the soft, subtle pastels of pre-dawn light. The detail is great in this shot and I, for one, am glad that you sacrificed your sleep to make the drive.
Nice photo of DT, Paul. I was there on a rainy day; it’s pretty neat in the fog, too. Did you take the walk all the way around it?
As usual, first quality effort and first quality result, Paul!

Thank you FotoPhreak! I had never seen
Close Encounters until after visiting the tower. Very 70s and fun. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you John! I did walk the entire circle around the base, including an off-trail stretch going straight to the sheer vertical rise of the tower from the sloping ground around the base. Glad you enjoyed.
Thank you Mr B, CameraF4, Mike, Rob! I forget now whether I left SD in snow or just during the trip where there a fresh 2-inches at a higher elevation. The area around the tower is pasture and farmland where I came over the nearest ridge just before the light began to change for dawn. I pulled over several times for distant views as I drove toward the tower. Glad you enjoyed the results.

Me, too. Pretty awesome, isn’t it?
Your early morning excursion paid off with dividends. Beautiful photo Paul.
Well worth the early wake up. Great image and story. Thanks!

Terrific! What color and detail!
Excellent photograph of the Tower. I have been going there most years since about 1993 as I hunt very close to there every year. After meat is in the cooler we take a day or two to visit Devil's Tower, Rapid City, Deadwood and Mount Rushmore.
