Yesterday I got caught in a rain storm without any rain gear, The D810 and 24~120mm lens got really soaked. The camera quit working while the lens works correctly. My car sets in full sun on the driveway, so I set the camera on the passengers seat without the front cap and the battery door open. I just went out to check. The stirring wheel was hot to touch and camera was also. Brought the camera inside, installed the battery and the camera works as advertised. This has happened to me twice and each time I opened the camera and left it to dry out and this has worked twice now.

I always carry 2 plastic bags big enough to cover my D850 ..started to do this with my D800E and D810 ..after being caught in a big rain .. I took the camera and placed it under my shirt ..., It kept the camera from getting soaked ..

Out of habit, I keep a plain, standard size grocery store plastic bag (rolled up and flattened) in my pants pocket at all times.

They have banned supermarkets from using these bags here now. The Govt has decided that they were only single use (because they are experts in almost everything and us users know nothing).

The moral of this story should be that you were lucky, TWICE. Want to try for three? Why didn't you learn your lesson the first time. No warranty covers this. The Nikon D810 is not a point and shoot and is not inexpensive to replace. You must have deep pockets. Were you that slow in school too to learn a lesson.
I always carry a trash bag in my back pocket for rain. Even though Nikon, Sony, and Canon professional gear is advertised as weather resistant, their is a limit. When I worked in a camera store we had a lot of customers like you, they are everywhere. Really man, are you really that slow.

He did not ask a question. He made a statement.

I agree, he did not ask a question, BUT, he revealed a lot about himself in his STATEMENT.

Out of habit, I keep a plain, standard size grocery store plastic bag (rolled up and flattened) in my pants pocket at all times. Doesn't matter if I have a camera on me or not. You just never know when you suddenly need a plastic bag. If I get caught in the rain while I'm outdoors with my camera -which has happened a few times over the years- I simply place the camera in the bag and close it up with a tight knot.
Why more people don't carry a plastic bag I really don't understand. They are essentially free, weigh next to nothing and hardly take up space at all if you roll them up and flatten them... they'll even fit in a wallet.

Slightly bulkier, Dominoes Pizza bag!

As you did in yours. Perhaps next time you will not be quick to judge.

As an educator for over 35 years I can tell you that many folks do not learn by their mistakes. It was not a judgement call. He said it himself that this was the SECOND time it has happened.
But, as a former special education teacher, I really understand him and his special needs.

Nice to know this worked for you, hope I never get my D3300 "Soaked". If I even Suspect Rain, NO Photography Journey that day unless I see the sidewalk dry and sky clear and Sunny.πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€―

And the D810 is "weather sealed" - a meaningless term. I have some good links for hopefully saving your camera.

Using rice - not!

If it’s less than 5 years old, maybe Nikon will give it a dust and clean for you under warrantee. They do this on pro equipment, at least I think they used to.

Knowing how hot a car in the sun gets I would be more concerned about the excess heat damaging the electronics inside than the moisture. I have read a number of cases where IPhones or cameras were covered in a vat of dry rice and the rice absorbed the moisture and there is no heat applied. Before #3 happens, I would investigate the process you use. That said, if what you did worked who am I to say it was wrong.

Thought the same thing.
