Auto ISO, Flash & Minimum SS

These images were taken less than one minute apart. The bird moved between feeders that were about 10 feet apart. The flash was set roughly centered between both feeders and triggered remotely.

The light was different at each location, as was the reflectiveness of the perch. The camera settings were identical, flash mode TTL. The camera did the thinking (blasphemy ).

Sony shooters check out Min SS and auto ISO if you are not already familiar with it.

I always use flash on TTL, camera in Manual mode, start with aperture at 4.5, shutter at 1/200,
ISO at 400. Can increase ISO to get a bit more reach for the flash or change aperture to affect
DoF. I let the TTL in the flash do the thinking.

Expand the TTL range with auto ISO and control the ISO automatically with min SS. This works extremely well when shooting in changing light and action with out the need to stop and change camera settings.
