I've been hanging on to these since January this year. I decided today would be a good day to share some of them for the first time. I was traveling south on a country road about 7 miles east of Merced California. I could see this guy sitting on top of a utility pole to the right side of the road from over a quarter of a mile away. I thought for sure it would fly as I approached but it stayed put. I have a D3400 with a 70-300 kit lens without stabilization that I carry in my car for those off occasions when one might wish he had a camera. I grabbed it, got out and started shooting. The eagle sat on the pole for about 30 minutes before it finally took off straight west. These images are just two of over fifty. I didn't pay attention to the background at all and was pleasantly surprised at what I saw when I got around to looking at the pictures on my desktop.
What are the odds of getting a capture of a bald eagle in the wild in these exact circumstances? Basically in the middle of nowhere and near the only U.S. flag within 100 square miles. I should have bought a few lottery tickets that day.
Have a happy and safe 4th everyone.
That first one makes me nervous. I don't know the specific statistics, but electrocution is a high cause of death for bald eagles. Congrats on the captures, though. An elusive subject, for sure.
Yes, the "high voltage" sign is disconcerting.
Nice shots & welcome to the forum ... hope it's a great experience for you.
Thanks. I've been looking forward to sharing some of my photos.
We just returned from Lake Fairlee. Vermont is beautiful and we had a great time.
Thanks for the welcome too.
