I plan spending about 5 days in Seattle area at the end of September and would appreciate any suggestions for photo opportunities in Seattle, Mount Rainier and Olympic Peninsula.

You will like it. Not too keen on photos of my home town these days, but have fun. What gear are you talking?

Thanks. I will take my Sony A7Riii and maybe just my 24-240 lens. I will be traveling with my wife and don’t feel that it would be right to spend most of my time with my toys.

Try taking the Seattle Ferry across Puget Sound to Bremerton, then drive up the coast to Port Ludlow or further north to Port Townsend. Beautiful rugged lumber mill country. A few casual places to eat. Wild flowers. Great vistas.

Much like Oakland CA, which has the best views of San Francisco, the Olympic Peninsula has some of the best views of Mt. Rainier. And marvelous Northern Rain Forests, too. This area has enough possibilities to fill a year of photography.

Remember, cloudy skies are The Creator's version of a Soft Box--very large.

Also, get out on the water--inexpensively by ferry and get the other perspective, too. I hope you don't have anything else nagging at your time to do anything but photography, because this area is different enough from other major cities to demand your attention and build excitement.

Then after that, go to Victoria and Vancouver BC.

Thanks. What part of Olympic Peninsula offers views of Mt. Rainier?

Everthing from trees to hills and rain clouds get in the way. But anywhere in the box has potential for Mt. Rainier views.

On Hwy 101 on the Olympic Peninsula going west keep an eye out for a left turn to Deer Park road just as you get into the edge of Port Angeles. It turns into a narrow mountain road that might make flatlanders uncomfortable but is completely safe as long as there's no snow or ice on it. Go all the way to the end, park and climb the little peak above the parking lot. It's a short easy climb with a good trail. You will be at the top of Blue Mountain. Look southeast and with any luck you will see the peak of Mt. Rainier with some of the most beautiful landscape you have ever seen in between. If you can be there at dawn the valleys will probably be under a fog layer with Rainier sticking up through it.
I have a medium format slide of that scene that would probably win prizes if I was into competitions.
There is also the east end of the Hurricane Ridge trail starting from the parking lot there, if you're up for a 13 mile hike going west to the Hurricane Ridge ranger station. Some people take 2 cars, one to Blue Mountain, the other to Hurricane Ridge. One group hikes east, the other west, they meet in the middle and exchange car keys. It's all worth the effort and planning.
I'm going on 15 year old memories so this might not be entirely accurate as far as distances and such go, but it's pretty close. A good map or a GPS will get you there.
Don't forget to stop at the road side stands on the peninsula for smoked salmon, some of the best you will ever find. It beats what they call smoked salmon in Denmark all to hell and back.
