I think I just discovered why so many people ask the same questions over and over again without using the search function. It turns out that the search function apparently only searches topic titles, at least on my computer using Chrome.

I just spent the last hour testing this theory because I was searching for a thread on the Mammoth camera in Kadina, South Australia. A search for "Mammoth" brought up several topic titles but not the thread I'm looking for. A search for "Kadina" did not bring up any topic titles, yet I got that name out of the thread, so I know it's on UHH somewhere. A search for "South Australia" brought up many topic titles but not the thread I'm looking for. A search for "Mammoth, Kadina, Australia" brought up many topic titles but not the thread I'm looking for. "Advance search" doesn't do any better.

Of course, after using mainframe and personal computers since 1973, there's a possibility I don't know what I'm doing. Perhaps someone who understands how the UHH search function "really works" can help the masses here.

Anyway, a few months ago there was a thread asking why the Mammoth camera was located in Kadina, South Australia. I know a person who's very interested in the Mammoth camera, so I emailed him. He just emailed me with an update on the Mammoth camera in Kadina. Turns out that it's not the Mammoth camera. Here's his email to me:

Just thought you'd be interested in how I followed up on your reports of the Mammoth being in Southern Australia. After a bit of chasing around, I finally found a nice lady called Lynn Spurling, who is the Library & Tourism Coordinator for Copper Coast Council. She told me she thought I was right and that it was at a museum in Kadina. She went to the museum and took pictures for me. It turned out to be an enormous Hunter Penrose lithographic camera, made in England in 1948 and transported to Adelaide, where it was used to make government maps between 1957 and 1973. So the search goes on.

I love research.

P.S. I put lots of terms in the topic title so that others can find this thread. I, of course, can find it under "My Topics."

I agree that it usually seems to be keywords in titles. But even if all titles were helpful 🙄, there is another issue: only a single page of search results is returned, so you either get only the early years or this year. Try it on "Help," with and without "show recent topics only."

Use Google's advanced search, with the url in the parameters.

I was getting search results all the way back to the beginning on that single page. I just kept scrolling and scrolling and scrolling....

I searched "mammoth camera" in quotes, and came up with this.

Yep. That's the only one I got, too, and it's not the one I'm looking for.
