Geiranger village is in Western Norway at the head of the Geiranger Fjord. The Norwegian Fjord Center is located here and offers a multi media exhibit on the history of the fjords and the inhabitants. There is even and avalanche room which is completely white and when you enter the floor and the walls shake and shudder and the roar of an avalanche is played through numerous speakers. The steep Trollstiger mountain road weaves through the town and connects to the Flydalsjuvet lookout turnout which offers panoramic views of the town and the fjord. Eventually you reach the top of Mt. Dalsnibba whose summit is 5000 ft above sea level. Geiranger is one of Norways most visited villages and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2005.
All the residents around the great fjord are aware of the danger coming from the mountains but few of the over 700,00 visiting tourist know of it. The 900 meter high Mt. Aknesfjallet looks like and ordinary mountain but along the mountain side runs a 700 meters long and up to 30 meters wide crack, which is growing larger each year by about up to 15 meters. The mountain is so unstable that someday it will plunge into the fjord. When that happens 900 meters of mountain will slide down into the 320 meter deep fjord and 150 million tons of rock will trigger a tsunami wave up to 80 meters high. Because of all the seismic monitoring equipment and the diligent watching geologist expect to be able to warn the residents of the 10 communities in the area at least 72 hours before the collapse occurs, allowing time for the evacuation of the over 5000 inhabitants. Arknesfjallet is the World's most watched mountain.

My pleasure Beowulf, this was one of the best trips we have taken. Did the area years ago as a land trip but it was much more interesting from shipboard and visiting the ports. Thanks for looking in and commenting, I appreciate it.
Very interesting place. Thanks for taking me there.
Very good series, Marsdad, love the country.
Thank you for the journey
Many thanks, my wife and I camped there back in the late 80's, so thanks for the memories! There is a 2015 Norwegian disaster film called "The Wave" about the threat to the town.
