How to make clear ice. Ever wondered why? There is a way to make it without spending the thousands of dollars for a machine. I do not believe they have contrived a method to make nugget ice clear yet, though. There other methods out there but this one might be easiest.

Sorry, a lot easier to go to the corner convenience store and pay a couple of bucks for a whole bag of clear ice.

Or you could just use hot water.

My ice maker no longer makes ice, a Samsung that I used a hair dryer in because of constant freezing..... there is a class action law suit because the Samsung ice makers were notorious for this problem.... My loss because the appliance repair guy said that the housing can not be replaced and Samsung is of no help even though it was a design flaw that caused me to use that hair dryer.... But... I can warn others not to buy their product.

Mine is too but I have opted for clear ice on some occasions. It seems like a lot of bother but it really isn't. Beats driving to the store.

I thought your post very interesting, I should have said that, I don't think that I personally will go to the trouble that you have gone to but I think that it is great that you have done so and have enjoyed it enough to create this post, I imagine that it is pretty cool to fill a glass with clear ice and your favorite beverage.

I was told by a repairman that as long as there is a feed to the ice maker it will not freeze up. But the problem is when the water is not there then it will freeze up when it restarts. So he said when you go on vacation to turn off the ice maker so it will not cycle on if there is no water. But mine is a different brand than a Samsung. We did have ours freeze up once, but only once.
Hate to be a drag but my convenience store is couple of miles away. Not actually convenient. And not sure if they have clear ice. It would be nice. But they do have nugget ice which I also like. But I do not believe that is a choice with nugget ice.

There is a class action lawsuit against Samsung because of their ice makers, it was a design flaw, the ice I have been buying generally a weeks worth at a time seems pretty clear but all the same I would prefer having an ice maker but I am not sure that it is worth $2000 for a new refrigerator. Ours is one of the ones with the ice maker inside the refrigerator cabinet so the freezer itself has no shelves to make ice on and it is generally full of food so trays are pretty much out of the question. I like store bought ice, it is not that hard for me to pick up a couple of bags on the way out of the door. I will say that those large crystal clear cubes look pretty cool though.

Nice, but I can't remember the last time I made or used ice cubes.

I don't understand this "problem". Doesn't every fridge come with ice cube trays? Fill 'em with tap water, stick 'em in the freezer compartment, and after an hour at most, presto! you have sixteen cubes. Dump 'em in a plastic (Ziplock) bag, leave it in the freezer, and repeat the process as often as needed. How hard is that?

And does it matter whether ice is "clear" as long as it's cold?

If you are content with that so am I, for you but there are advantages to clear ice. One is it melts slower so your drinks get cold without being diluted. Icicles are clear and not opaque. And another which is not all that important is it looks better. I have had ice that was not cold believe it or not. Too much air for it to actually be cold. But I love ice and am an ice chewer. Only a few know for sure. My wife cannot stand ice.
It is really not a problem just a preference.
I guess I might compare it to a point and shoot camera compared to a DSLR.
