Bridge Camera for my wife

My wife and daughter are trekking off to Africa in September for a safari. Unfortunately, I don't know any of the details.

Obviously, she wants to take photos, but would be completely lost with my D850, and changing lens probably isn't in the cards.

I've been looking at some of the bridge camera "superzooms", but I have no idea what would be important to a novice photographer.

Do any of y'all have any ideas or recommendations on where to start? When I look at all the "Best of" lists on the Internet, it seems that they all end up with different camera recommendations.

Most of the posts I found here on bridge cameras were several years old.

Sony RX10 IV. You can Google it to gt tons of information on this camera.

I owned Version 3 and was not satisfied with low light focus. That has been fixed in version 4.

Nikon B700. 20 MP and 60X zoom. Even new, it won't break the bank. Find a nice used one and save some money. I'm a Canon guy but, if and when I find a steal on one, it'll be my next travel camera.

I have a Fujifilm S8630. 16 MP and 36X zoom. Great pictures and a deal at 50.00 from a pawnshop. Won't lose my marbles if it falls in the lake on a fishing trip. I'd be upset....but not the end of the world.

You don't have to have the latest and greatest. Ride the wave right behind it. Save some of that hard earned money. That's what I do.

The Sony RX10 IV is top shelf; I have a Panasonic LUMIX fz 2500 and like it.

Unless you really want to spend $1700.00 on a Sony RX10 IV for this trip, I would recommend considering a Nikon P900 Bridge Camera with its 83X zoom. It is selling for about $600.00 new. This should meet all of her needs on a Safari. Many have produced some very nice Safari images with this camera. Another option would be the Canon SX60 or SX70. The SX70 is selling new for about $500.00 with a 65X zoom. On my trip to Kenya in 2017, I used my Canon SX50 and came home with some great images. The Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 is another option for about $600.00 new, but only has a 16X Zoom (400mm)

The Sony price is $1700.00. Take a look. It’s a great camera. If your going to buy it now. It’ll take a little time to get familiar. Then all will be amazing. Dont delay. Last minute is the worst think you could do with any new piece of kit. I have it and love it.

I love the Sony rx10 IV. Many times it is my “ go to” camera for ease of use plus quality of photo. I am beginning to hate changing lenses.

I went to Newfoundland land last year. Photographing icebergs, I didn’t want to be chaging lenses. I bought the Sony for this trip. It wasn’t all that I took with me. However it was all that I used.

If I were just beginning to acquire new camera gear I would seriously consider the Sony RX10 IV version after what I have seen & read today because of its range in focal length and the speedy auto focus , not to mention the 24 fps burst capabilities and improved low light capability in version #4 . It will be perfect for action video or stills of wildlife from a safe distance which should be your first concern . The price is quite fair and it's only 20.1 mps but that can still produce wonderful images and for most of us is more than adequate given novice ability and familiarity with the craft on quick study.

If the price is to high , consider renting it with insurance for the trip and you may discover that you cannot part with it after all. There are ,of course, several smaller pocket-point & shoot types available for half the price of the Sony RX10 IV....just make sure they record RAW as well as Jpegs.

Please let us know what you decided upon and share your adventure with us soon. Good Luck.

If she wants to stay with Nikon, can I recommend the B700 or the P900. She will appreciate the lens "reach" on both cameras.

Have a Safe and Wonderful trip!

I'd prefer the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 over the P900.
Google to compare. Example: https://cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-Coolpix-P900-vs-Nikon-Coolpix-P1000

I have a NIKON P- 900 with very little clicks. I would sell for $400. Its' lens is capable of 1000mm reach. It's image stabilized & does great, close-up or distant. P.M. me if interested.
