I just got a beautiful used Nikkor 35 F2 ais. Using it on my D800E In aperture priority mode the meter shows one stop less than the lens setting. Ie the camera display reads f4 and the aperture is set at f2.8. The exposure is good. I'm just trying to understand is this normal. Oh by the way I love the output of this lens.

One of my favorites from when I shot film. My “Normal”. If I get a chance to go into work tomorrow, I’ll put it on the D800 and see what I get.

That is an excellent lens. My standard, always on my camera, lens "back in the day". I'll be interested in what you find out.

Did you program the camera and lens in the Menu?

just go to the set up (wrench) menu. scroll down to " non cpu lens data " and save your max f stop and focal length for your lens. You will have to do this for every non- cpu lens that you will use (I think 9 slots max) and manually change it for each lens every time you use it if you want the correct read out and correct EXIF data recorded. There are no electronics in the lens and your camera doesn't know what's being attached

My D750 does exactly the opposite. With my 55 AI Micro Nikkor on it set to f8, the window shows f5.6. Doesn't bother me, I always shoot manual and set the camera where I want, checking the screen for exact exposure.

Agree. I have 3 non-CPU lenses set up this way, and the aperture readings are right on. I don't know why yours would be different.

This is still a decent lens, though not wide open. I have the AF D version, which I believe is the same optical formula, and that's my observation.

I echo what 'Petesfixit' wrote about non cpu lenses. The camera needs to be 'Programmed' to know what lens has been attached. I have five lenses set for use in my digital bodies, both FF and crop. Main thing, is to set the maximum aperture of each lens. Good old Nikon...we get maximum use out of our 'old' lenses. Just wish they would bring out an AF adapter, like the 16a.
