iCloud: Delete photos and videos to save storage on iCloud

You can free up iCloud storage space by deleting photos and videos you don’t want to keep.

If you turned on iCloud Photos on your iOS device (iOS 8.1 or later) or Mac (OS X 10.10.3 or later), the photos or videos that you delete are removed from iCloud and from all your devices where iCloud Photos is turned on.

If you didn’t turn on iCloud Photos on your iOS device or Mac, you can delete photos or videos from the Camera Roll album on your iOS device, so they aren’t included in your iCloud backup.

Delete photos or videos
In the Photos app on your iOS device (iOS 8.1 or later), tap Photos at the bottom of the screen, then view your photos and videos by moments.

Tap Select, tap one or more photos or videos, then tap .

Tap Delete [items].

You can also delete photos and videos using the Photos app on your Mac (OS X 10.10.3 or later) or on iCloud.com. See Use iCloud Photos to store photos in iCloud in the Photos User Guide.

Deleted photos and videos are placed in the Recently Deleted album on your device, where they remain for 30 days. After that, items are permanently removed from all your devices set up for iCloud Photos.

You can remove items from your devices before the 30-day time period is up. On your iOS device, in the Recently Deleted album, tap Select, tap to select one or more items, tap Delete, then tap Delete [items].

Delete photos or videos from Camera Roll
If you’re not using iCloud Photos, before you delete photos or videos from the Camera Roll on your iOS device, you can import them to your computer. See the Apple Support article Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

In the Photos app, tap Albums, then tap Camera Roll.

Tap Select, tap one or more photos or videos, then tap .

Tap Delete [items].

iCloud: Delete photos and videos to save storage o... (show quote)

Thank you very much. That's a lot of information to swallow for a dumb bunny who barely knows how to turn the computer on. I am going to try the paragraph which says 'In your photos app on your iOS device, tap photos and videos at the bottom of the screen, then view photos and videos by moments. Tap select, tap one or more photos or videos, then tap. Tap delete.'
I hope I'm successful. One thing that has been confusing, what is iOS device? Does that mean my computer?

The iOS device is an iPhone or an iPad. If your computer is a Mac this will be easier but you can also do it from a Windows PC.

PM me with that detail and I will try to walk you through it. It's really not so hard. I've done this before for others.

Not out of the woods yet but I am not giving up. I am glad to know what iOS means. I do not have an iPhone or iPad. I have a Mac computer. Knowing that, maybe you can give me simple a, b, c instructions. Your help is greatly appreciated, Stan.

Phone or iPad?

Camera roll is what is on your device. Shared albums are the images stored in the cloud. You should be able to open the shared album(s) and then select the images you want to delete. That will remove them from you devices and the “cloud”.

FYI - I like Apple products but I find Apples processes for storing images to be confusing.

If you delete them from your photos library they will be removed from iCloud, but you still have thirty days to retrieve them if you make a mistake
Be sure to copy them somewhere before you delete them

You sound VERY MUCH like you need VERY BASIC TRAINING in using your devices.

iOS is Apple's name for the operating system on "i" devices...iPhone, iPad. The operating system on Mac computers is called MacOS or OS-X. X=10.

Are there "Dummies" series books for iOS devices? If you can get past the title, they are excellent helps and references for the beginner and even more experienced folks.
