Agree with you wholeheartedly John. I have taken many snapshots while attempting to take "good" photos. I am still learning to take good photos instead of snapshots, and I think planning definitely goes into the equation to accomplish that.

Another name for picture.
However, many assign a certain "quality" level to it.

That is true! "Quality" depends upon what you captured in your picture.

“Photography is simultaneously and instantaneously the recognition of a fact and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that express and signify that fact”
― Henri Cartier-Bresson

To answer your question, it's quite simple. One recognizes a setting has having potential. Then, with camera ready, keep watch until the scene develops that incorporates that scene and the visualization the photographer had, even if it is just an outline of the idea. Yes, that can be very disappointing. However, when it works, one has a masterpiece.

And since "quality" is relative to the viewer, what one person calls an photograph, another may call a snapshot.

Every photo is a snapshot, an image capture in a moment in time. Some are just planned more than others. Some are planned a lot more than others. And some are just impulsive, seemingly unplanned shots - something of interest, lift the camera, point, shoot. This is what I do more often than not.

Snap as in snapshot infers a 'quickly taken shot'. However, most people learn that 'thinking time' creates a better shot.

a 'slow shot' should be better composed and exposed. It should also cut down on the time to 'remove' unwanted distractions like signs and litter.

snap travels at the speed of sound....having seen some of the ISO settings used here they should be called Warp shots.

Tongue firmly in cheek!

I just skipped to the last comment on page 5. Maybe it is time to ignore such statements as the one from the OP.

I am a 68 year old "Casual" Advanced Amateur Photographer, my Camera, a Nikon D3300 with a Nikon 50mm 1.8g lens and also a Nikon 18-140 3.5-5.6 Telephoto lens. Now I Personally refer to my created images as "Photographs" not "Snapshots". No I am not a Professional by any means, but I do feel decent"Casual" Photography deserves more respect than the term "Snapshot".

I refer to mine as “images.”

Snapshot, photograph, and if edited enough maybe a digital image.

I'm a fan of that oldtimer who said, What is in a name ...

What you are doing ends up being a snapshot but when you plan a shot and take the time to set the controls of the camera to obtain the best results of the subject in front of you I would not call that a snapshot.

How long must one plan a shot before it qualifies as photograph?

To clear up once and for all how long exactly must it be planned to go from snapshot to photograph
