ipad os 13 beta hard drive support

hi
I just upgraded my ipad air II to ipad os 13 beta.

There is support for some hard drives. but power and format may be an issue.
I was able to connect a hfs+ formatted hard drive and see 2 of my partitions (dual boots sierra and Mojave).
the filles app works with it and navigates the folders.

The downside plugging directly to the usb3 camera adapter didn't work even with power supplied, i had to use a powered usb hub to spin up the drive and connect the hub to the iPad.

this is not so good for being out and about but it works :) Probably would work with a usb power pack.
It also now connects to an apple mouse and keyboard via bluetooth and I can use a 1080p monitor with the apple tv screen sharing with the iPad.

Did you know you can record to a mac from the apple tv using usb -c cable (4th gen) or via wifi (4th gen or 4k version)?

I don't know which file systems apple is supporting hfs+ fat-32 for sure.

I plugged in a usb key and got the your device is using too much power so went the usb hub route with that too.

Action cam yi 4k+ connected without a hub , i was able to browse files but iPad wouldn't open the raw dng files video and jpegs were fine.
I tried a USB hard drive dock that saw hard drives but not my sd card from my camera (other card readers have worked before).
I even tried a dell3100 Dock but didn't appear to get anywhere with it.

Hope this is of interest, it should help those wanting to go on holiday without a laptop.

I'm waiting a little bit longer before I DL this new OS onto my iPad Pro. It sounds like using an SSD would be optimal power wise.

You need power for the hard drive for it to work but as power is also the data lead on most 2.5 inch drives its not straight forward for the lightning equipped iPads.
Probably an iPad pro would deliver enough power over usb-c to make things simpler.

So a powered USB Hub should work and these can be powered from a 5 volt supply such as from a Powerbank.

I have managed so far to get a 500GB system drive from a mac working but not a 4TB seagate 2.5" drive. I will look further into this, the beta has only been available for 2 days.

Ok I just got a new usb3 4 port hub this morning which takes power from a micro usb port.

With power supplied I am able to power a hdd and use it on the iPad using the camera kit usb adapter.
I tried a few arrangements. The hdd is rather power hungry but I can run the iPad and hdd from a power bank. The power bank doesn’t supply power when it’s charging. Although I am able to charge the power bank from the hub while accessing the hdd. It was a bit too much to ask the iPad charger to charge the power bank run the hdd and charge the iPad. One device had to go on a second charger. It seems that the wall chargers are a little too weak.

On the plus side I can put the file browser next to the chrome browser and i can play music from the file manager from the hdd while typing this.

The file browser doesn’t like to lose focus by being in the background although side by side seems to be fine. It doesn’t seem to want to allow apps direct access to the files. It took a while but I’m now playing video from the hdd in file browser while typing this.

I have also tried connecting the iPhone to my iPad with the camera connection kit. It starts off well the iPhone says do I wish to trust this computer and photos on the ipad asks if I want to import photos but nothing shows from the iPhone. On the plus side my actioncam does connect and transfer files.

Photos still needs work, probably airdrop or similar are possible for now. It’s a beta! With the Powerbank it’s possible to review in a field battery powered and transfer to a hdd. Editing still requires files to be transferred to the iPad although that may change when third party applications are updated. I think apple will be under pressure to allow app access to the hdd directly but it is not here yet. File manager is willing to copy to apps so long as you have space it works well enough.

That was the reason I suggested a SSD.
Their pwr. rqmts. are much more friendly to this type of application.
Most SSD's draw <0.2W and have little to no inrush current.

On the other hand a 4TB SSD is not cheap The iPad can complain about the power draw of an sd card reader... it may complain about an SSD too.

I can be fully mobile using a powerbank which may be one of the attractions of this, while avoiding the weight of a laptop. Hopefully application developers will have the option of opening files in place. It does go against the design of an IPad app a is totally isolated from app b app b can have a copy of a file modified by A earlier but that file can't be modded by b and given directly to A (another copy would need to be made). File copying seems slow currently , hopefully that will be addressed soon.

Very true. Now if someone would make a power bank with an embedded Linux server we might be able to have a seamless interface.
Apple's protection makes it very hard to do things that honestly need to be addressed.
As you stated, hopfully a developer can come up with an app they will certify.
