An Australian Gnamma Hole.

Early explorers used these water holes to survive in the harsh outback, They would capture an aboriginal, feed them only salted meat for several days then release them, the aborigine would head for the nearest water point and the explorers would follow, make note of the location and use it on their return.
This one has been fenced to prevent stock and wild animals falling in.

Hi Bullwinkle, the depth of the various holes is not a constant,seldom more than 6ft.
