Todd - if your ONLY GOAL - with your photos - is to post them on Social Media - ANY camera will do.

In fact, the LESS MP you use, the quicker and easier it'll be to upload 'em …

Don't think ANYONE - looking at pics on the Net - know, or CARE - how many MP you used for "that" shot!

C'mon, Man - GET REAL! … Using a Pro Canon - for uploading shots onto FB??? … Silly ….

It all depends on what you are shooting. Any camera will not do in some situations.
Keep in mind for some organisations social media may be the main way of communication.

I know lots of pros who shoot sports and racing and post a lot of stuff on social media. They also sell prints and sell to or fo shooting for magazines. But a big part of the market today is getting the shot(s) and getting them out to the public as quickly as possible. Most of these people also sell prints but it is not easy to sell prints as many people may believe...especially for good money. I have heard shooters complain more than once that racers driving quarter million dollar cars and traveling in half million
dollar rigs don’t want to pay $50 or $100 for a nice print. Some even complain that the racers expect to get free photos of their car.

You don’t use good equipment unless you have a reason and posting online is only part of the reason...

Yes, Todd - but you mentioned "Social Media" which implies you're just sharing pics for fun. Now, then - I have a half-dozen 24MP DSLRs - a77, a77 II, D7100, D5500, D5300, D3200 - and I don't use ANY of them for posting pics on FB and the like - as it takes too long using Dial-Up to upload them. Here, I shrink them to 20 or 25% - so it doesn't take forever to upload them. But, IF I know ahead of time - they're going to be posted on FB - I shoot with my 12MP T3 - OR a bridge - that way, it doesn't take forever!!!!

If you learned how to down size your pictures properly, or learned how to shoot smaller images with all your DSLRs, you wouldn't need to use a different camera to shoot for FB. Might serve you better to learn how to really use what you have, then worrying about the specs of all the top end cameras that you will never own.

Just a thought.

Stuff I put on Facebook sites I usually down size to max 2048 pixels on the long side when saved out of Lightroom. Like I said if I am printing 8x10 or putting on social media and shooting in hood light you probably can’t tell if I shot with the MkII or MkIII. But I think using good glass on either is an important factor.

The other morning I borrowed a 300 f/2.8 to try out downtown in Charlotte. Also shot it some with my 2x Extender. It is a little over 5 lb. 600mm f/5.6 then. It did show how used I am to shooting zooms and not having to zoom with my feet that much...

A 5LB. LENS, huh? … Think that's a lil outta MY reach … can you post a shot or two shot with it, Todd?

The 1D MkIII came out in 2007 if I recall... you are thinking 1Dx I believe. The Dx merged to high end 1D series cameras into one body.

I will see what I got...have not even downloaded the shots yet. Just looked at them on the camera back. That is supposed to be one of Canon’s sharpest lenses. May just show I am getting old and shaky...

Why, yes, Todd - I believe I was. But, you'd written just Mk. II and Mk. III - casually - after having written about your 1Dx II - so, I naturally thought you'd indulged in the newer Pro Canon - which, I believe - will be introduced at the PhotoKina at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC in late October - along with the 7D3 and/or - the 90D (whichever) which may have already hit the shelves, by then.

Yes, you're right, Todd … there were TWO 1D series PRO Canons for a while - wasn't there? … But the OTHER one was an H - wasn't it? … Therefore - not quite FULL FRAME. I don't think they really merged. Canon just stopped offering the H format cameras as Pro Models. But, they were BOTH available for a time. Personally, I'm a little confused about why Canon chose to offer that model as a Pro Series Body.

Yes, one was more of a portrait studio general use model and the APS-H was more of a sports and action shooting model. I will continue to contend they merged the two into the 1Dx models. One model that can handle both types of shooting. The 5D series was less expensive and didn’t offer the high FPS of the 1Dx but did it go into video capability sooner.

Okay, Todd … take your time - no rush …

BTW - here's a list of what happened, when - with Canon's 1D series:

1D (APS-H) Fall 2001
1Ds (FF) Fall 2002
1D2 (APS-H) Spring 2002
1Ds2 (FF) Fall 2004
1D2 N (APS-H) Summer 2005
1D3 (APS-H) Spring 2007
1Ds3 (FF) Fall 2007
1D4 (APS-H) Fall 2009 (last H - disc. end of 2011)
1Dx (FF) - beginning of 2012
1Dc (FF) - beginning of 2013 (disc. in Fall of 2016)
1Dx2 (FF) - Spring of 2016 (current Pro FF)

Todd - think the MERGE to which you refer was the 1Dx and 1Dc (BOTH FF) becoming the 1Dx2.
The 1DC was discontinued (merged, if you will) one year after the 1Dx was introduced.

The H-Format models were all discontinued at the end of 2011 (last was the 1D4) …

Didn't check up on the 5D series - don't think the original 5D did video, though.

Here's the Video Capabilities of the 5D Series:

5D - introduced in 2005 w/ Uncompressed 1080P Video
5D2 - introduced in 2008 w/ 1080p Video
5D3 - introduced in 2011 w/ 1080p Video
5Ds / 5Ds R - introduced in 2014 w/ 1080p Video
5D4 - introduced in 2016 w/ 4K Video

I would contend that the merge was the 1Dx and the 1Dc was just eliminated. I don’t think video people were buying the 1Dx2 for video, perhaps still shooters who needed short video clips. The 1Dc was even more expensive and I have never seen a stills shooter using one.

Todd - a quick glance of the Canon Models Chart at Wiki - reveals they ALL had Video Capabilities - all the way back to 2000. But, the 5D2 went to FULL 1080p Video. The earlier 5D had it, but in a more rudimentary form. The only real change in Video Capability, since - was the addition of 4K to the 5D4 in 2016 …

The 1Dx2 has superior video capability than the 5D4... Due to the ability to move more data faster I believe...

The original 5D does not have video.
(I own one)
