Hi! They call me Priest. Started using a camera because I found out what a terrible artist I was. Been reading the film vs digital and it was the same things I was telling my son. He just bought a new D5100 and was shooting everything in sight and asked me if I would like to have a new one, too. I said, I would rather give him one of my vintage Nikons or one of my Minolta 101's or and XE-7 so he could learn to be a real photographer by learning about light and the beauty of painting with a camera as a fine brush and film as the canvas. So, not to bore you, I cut my teeth on the old metal vintage cameras [of which I have many] and still marvel at the beauty and quality of yesterdays lens. As a professional I would like my son to see the whole picture=
there is room in this world for both and many more formats then 35mm. I will stop now and continue to enjoy all your comments as I still strive to get that one perfect shot regards of camera or format. Priest

If it makes you feel any better keep in mind that most, if not all of the technology in use today will be passe by the time your son reaches your age today; and he may well bemoan what he will perceive to be the lost of his comfort level - the things that he knew. Actually directly in regard to the subject - seems one major difference to me is in black & whites. I just don't see the tonal range when shot with digital. But, I remind myself that it may well be - I just don't know what I'm doing. Since you are known as the "Priest" - a picture for you.

Thanks, that is a beautiful shot --maybe only 40-50 years to finish. Cathedrals have a lot of hidden details carvers snuck in for their own pleasure.

Don't blame the shotgun approach to getting photos on digital. People who dont know what they are doing have been using that aproach for decades. Is your son happy with his shots? Is he basically taking snapshots of friends and family or does he want to improve? If he is happy then there is nothing wrong with his photos. If he wants to improve there are many good introduction to photography books and dvd's that will teach him the fundamentals. also encourage him to post some of his photos for critique here. We wont bite. Okay now the important question. Why do they call you Priest? Since you have a son you clearly arent catholic? curiosity overwhelms me. You can tell by my screen name that I am a big fan of the chairman of the board. So whats the story?

John is doing very well with his pix. He just wants to learn the basics of light, comp, film, ect. Sadly, I had every book after having my own studio so long. I let one of photographers take them home-you know how that goes--same place all my 45's went. John just bought a Nikon 5100 so he is shooting anything and everything and having a great time while he is on vacation. You get to do a lot in life, if you take advantage of time. One thing I did was study for the priesthood--so I am a now retired Episcopal Priest. Liked girls too much to be Roman like grandma wanted. Italians, like large families so had to have my four sons. If it bothers you, Ron will do. Peace.

No why should the title bother me? Sorry I forgot episcopalians and anglicans also call their ministers priest. It would bother me if you were a leader of some satanic chicken sacrificing cult. I am just curious about peoples screen names especialy the creative ones. It just tells me about a persons personality and likes or dislikes. If I was going for a masters degree in sociology, or psychology I think a study of screen names would make a great thesis. :!: 8-) okay i admit I march to the beat of a different drummer but I find people fascinating. God bless you. FYI I am Pentecostal myself. :)

Same Drummer, different beat. My lifting buddy is Pentecostal-we ride Harleys together and visit nursing homes together, but the Amish rule the landscape around these parts. Love photographing their giant horses, but we respect their views on images so we never include them in any shots. It is amazing to see a 12 yr old plowing with a team of their Belgians all alone in the middle of a field miles from the farmhouse-probably safer then a tractor. Right now, I am trying my best to get some good shots of a couple of Blue Jays-boy they spook easy. Tripod and a long shutter cord-next step. Have a great day.

The amish also spok easy. By the way thank you for respecting their culture. Have you ever seen one of their 24 hour barn raisings? amazing now i know how the egyptians built the pryamids. I am from mid michigan origiionaly and the amish were moving in both michigan and ohio. I miss driving by their areas and stopping by a buggy and buying baked goods from them.

Their produce looks like it came out of food mag--amazing farmers and bakers. Banana bread and coffee--what a treat. I stop every Sat. for peppers and tomatoes to make my Italian recipes--tomato salads and fried peppers. I was invited out to visit their farm last week. Wish I had the time to can. Fresh peaches in dead of winter ==what a treat. Changing the subject--I met "old blue eyes" son in Monroeville, PA about 30 years ago when he was on tour-nice person, but didn't have the pipes his dad did. Mom still loves Frank and she is 92. Did you know, as an actor, he would never do more then one take. The guy was 120 pounds of pure talent so I see where your coming from. Many years ago my then boss had to singers on the jukeox=yep! Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Peace.

did you know Frank

The best thing about Mr Sinatra that I respect was his absolute loyalty to his friends. Las Vedas became sesegregated because he refused to play there untill his friend sammy davis jr could stay at the same hotel and faciliites as frank. Vegas caved. no one said no to mr S. His music is timeless. agree that his son and daaughter dont have the pipes. however nancy's these boots are made for walking is still a catchy tune.

you are right. I forgot that piece of history-he was a real friend to his friends and a real threat to anyone who crossed him. Read his auto-bio-a great read. There is one radio station out here in farm land and Nancy's boots are still played at least once an hour==for real. Going to 90 today-think I will skip my walk in the woods. There is a mother and fawn waiting for me to take their portrait.
Peace.
