In addition to photography another hobby of mine is genealogy. In this process I have accumulated a number of old group photographs of family reunions. Where might I find a software program or process that I could save just an outline of the individuals in the photo and then number them so I could then start a list of those in the photo.
Actually, Nikon Cameras (and probably others) have a feature in the retouch menu that will allow you to make a color outline copy of an image. Photo Shop Elements has a pencil sketch effect - with a bit of experimentation either of those might do the trick
I used to do a regular group photos for a company who wanted an outline like you describe. I just did it by hand by pasting a white layer over the photo, reducing the opacity so I could see the photo, and drawing the outline with the brush tool. It doesn't have to be perfect.
Try Irfanview - recommended to me here for same thing, and it's free.

I have used IrfanView but it's Windows only, no Mac version. I have also used Photoshop. IrfanView is freeware. The basic process is edge detection. I believe IrfanView does it in color so you might want to convert to black and white after the conversion. Also I think it comes out negative so you can invert it to get black lines on a white background.
FastStone can also do a sketch conversion but I don't use that program so I don't know much about how to do it.

I believe Microsoft Paint still produces outlines (sketches) of images and still comes bundled for free with Windows. IrfanView, also free for home use, is another extremely versatile photography program. Free being the key word here.

Here is an example of one I did tracing by hand as described in my post above. I think it has a much cleaner look than using outlining software, and it doesn't take as long as you might think.
I have been away on vacation for the past month and am now back and trying to catch up. There are several good suggestions here and I will try each of them and figure out what will work best for me.
I thank each of you for your time and thoughtful responses.
