You DO have to set the camera to assign the back button for focusing. It's not intrinsically that way.
I use a Nikon D750 and find the BBF is good many times. Haven’t decided it’s the only way to go. The biggest disadvantage I have found is in using a remote cable to fire the pic, either wired or wireless, the camera will not focus if BBF is set. That’s annoying if you forget to switch back and are away from the camera, as in wireless.

You have to disable the shutter from auto focusing. The back button is often already set to meter and focus.
