I also use a Black Rapid sling, secured by the tripod thread at the bottom of the camera. It is extremely secure, easy to use and I love the balance.

Peak design strap is all I use. And the Nikkor 70-200 is my favorite, most accurate lens

Whilst many promote the use of the tripod collar for strap attachment of a heavy lens we have to wonder if the manufacturers took this into consideration at the design stage. As an example, here's whats under the bracket attachment of my 70-200.

Four screws, I estimate the threads being between 1.5 to 1.75 mm dia, certainly no concern with standard tripod use where they are very lightly loaded if at all, if the rig is reasonably balanced. But now hang the lens plus heavy camera from them, putting them in tension and then at any time with the rig at an angle the screws being unequally loaded.

It may well be that there is something else under this component securing it to the ring, I would certainly be happier if I knew the answer to that

I carry my Nikon 200- 500 (considerably heavier than the Nikon 70-200) with a black rapid strap attached to the tripod collar for going on 3 years without issue. Same for my 70-200. And yes, I am sure Nikon, Sony, and Canon engineers make sure the camera screws can withstand the torke and strain put on the fittings. I am sure those 4 screws are over engineered to handle the stress. I have always attached my straps this way for going on ten years without the slightest issue. Don' t worry yourself over it, all is fine.

Whilst we do not hear of many failures I suspect this is due because the vast majority of us are careful and aware of the value hanging at this point. Thankfully most of the failures we do hear of are caused by 'abnormal' occurrence.

Taking the specific lens example I posted the image of, to me as an engineer it simply looks under engineered (w.r.t lifting loads/bending) and most likely the weakest point, ignoring strap failure. Investigation interestingly has shown that replacement plates are available, thicker than the original 'thin' plate which has been reported as distorting under load.

So, there may be nothing to be concerned about for the majority of us but for the prudent ones that don't automatically assume the manufacturers have over engineered something it would be sensible to inspect this component part on occasions with the tripod bracket removed.

As a Nikon Fanboy, I couldn't agree with you more. 'Poor' is actually a fairly nice description as some are just awful. Well, they keep RRS in business! Best of luck.

I am surprised. Even though you know how to attach it, it does not mean you did. I have never had a strap come loose.

Hedgehoggers in order not to remove the tripod plate from the camera this accessory needs to be purchased.

BlackRapid Tripod Plate 50 Quick-Release Plate (50mm)

I use peak design and can interchange between cameras as they are set up for peak design.Camera strap is custom hand made thread which is very strong and soft.It compacts very well and very comfortable.
