Here is the scenario:
1. You are an advanced amateur photographer; some may call you an enthusiast.
2. You frequently take cruises to the Med, Asia, Europe, and South America.
3. You enjoy taking street and travel photos, and sometimes long shots from the cruise ship as it arrives/departs ports.
4. When on "shore excursions", you enjoy being in the cities and restaurants, but not hiking or nature walks or kayaking. Lots of photos inside churches, museums, restaurants, and popular spots in the urbam scene, with an almost even mix of day and night.
5. You don't like rain, hate snow, and prefer temperatures above 50°F.
6. You have a Panasonic GX-9 micro 4/3 camera, a flash that can be used on or off (wifi or bluetooth) camera (GN 127) and a bunch of lenses (see below).
7. You will not have a tripod, but your camera has internal stabilization, as do some of your lenses.

7. THE CHALLENGE:
RANK ALL lenses, In priority order by letter, your choice of lenses to take on your next Mediterranean cruise.
You must choose ONLY from the list, using only the letters, without further comment.
Focal lengths are ALL listed in 35mm equivalent format in order to eliminate confusion. (2x crop factor, etc.)

LENSES:
A. Pany 24mm f1.4
B. Pany 14-28mm f4
C. Pany 24-70mm f2.8
D. Oly 120mm f2.8 macro
E. Pany 85mm f1.2
F. Pany 70-200mm f2.8
G. Pany 200-600mm f3.5-5.6

Your letter ranking should be based on the usefullness for the scenario given, without considering weight or size. You will be taking few, if any, portrait or landscape shots; you will be takimg some food shots in restaurants.

ANSWER EXAMPLE:
C
A
B
F
D
E
G

Can't wait to see the responses to this, especially from those who have lived thru a similar scenario.!!
Thanks for stepping up to the challenge!
Here is the scenario: br 1. You are an advanced am... (show quote)

Was going by manufacturer’s designated name for the lenses. So I take it your “120mm” has a mfrs marketing name of 60mm? If not, I’m not the one who is confused. Cheers!

The actual native focal length of each of the lenses listed is HALF of what the OP posted. He listed the lenses with the equivalent field of view in 35mm film/full frame digital terms. Once he works with the system for a year or so, he'll forget all about the conversion mess and use the native focal lengths.

C (70% of my work — a must-own lens)
F (15-20% of my work — a must-own lens)
E (The f/1.7 version is fine, and $1000 less)
D (essential, but I use the Panasonic 30mm more — I do lots of copy work with it)
B (versatile indoors, but pricey for the amount of use I would give it)
G (only version 2 of this... and only for outdoor work in great light)
A (a GREAT lens, but pricey for the amount of use I would give it)

Thank you Bill. I was hoping you and Linda of Maine would respond, since I value the opinions of you two very highly. Just to confirm, this is the priority order you would choose for taking lenses on a cruise to do street and travel photos? Most of the reading i have done recommend a 35mm equivalent focal length of 24-50mm, with most folks recommending in the 28-35mm range. The Pany 7-14 f4 would probably only be used indoors, as you suggested. The Pany 35-100 f2.8 is nice, but I just can't see a bunch of use for a Pany 35-100 f2.8 (70-200mm equivalent) lens on the streets in cities. Am I missing something? I chose the Oly for its longer focal length and it allows me to get macro shots without getting so close to the subject, be it a flower or a coin... also want to dupe some slides with it.

I'm sorry, but I find this query somewhat arrogant, irrelevant, and irritating.

I would say that this question would be unnecessary if the OP spends more time behind the camera in similar situation.

Yea, you kinda figure what lens, what ISO, what shutter, ... the more you use the camy.
(I wonder, does the majority rule even if they don't align with his research?)

It is amazing how many people at UHH are 100% self taught and never have to concern themselves with the opinions of others. I would guess these folks never need to read a review, since they are mostly the opinions of others who may or may not be knowledgeable.

But John Donne said:

”No man is an island, entire of itself ..."

I am a self taught photographer starting with 35mm film as a teenager in the mid 50's. I recognize I still have much to learn. The complexity of all the many aspects of photography is an important part of its fascination for me. You are absolutely correct about the value of a community for learning. That is why I participate in this web site. It is how this "challenge" was posed rather than the OP seeking information and insights on the best lens choices that bothered me. I very seldom have a negative comment about a posting. Maybe its just been a long day.

Of course our opinion means little or nothing. I traveled Italy shooting a bunch of street photos using my Nikon D3 with the 17-35/2.8. How many of you would do that? For me it's perfect.

And yes, I would do that again.

All depends. Share your results with the UHH community to help us make that decision!
