JohnR, I cannot help but think you got a lemon, perhaps dropped at the dealer. But also check to make sure contacts on the lens are clean and your front filter is ok if you are using one. The 18-135 is really, really sharp.

I have since reverted to Nikon 18-140 which I find heaps better than both Sony lenses and the Nikon 18-200.

I agree that the Nikon 18-140 is a good lens. It was my main lens when I used a Nikon D7100. But I think that the Sony 18-135mm is at least as good, if not better. It has performed well for me.

Although the 18-135 lens will focus fairly closely at 18mm, it won't get you into macro range. For that you either need a dedicated macro lens like the Sony E 30mm macro, or the FE 90mm macro to get a true macro image, that is, 1:1. Or you can do it the cheap way like I did and get an inexpensive set of extension tubes to go between your lens and the camera. Make sure it has the electrical contacts so your lens can communicate with the camera through the extension tubes. I've used mine once and was satisfied with the results.

About the pamphlet remark. I saw the same thing in a pamphlet that came with my Sony 30 mm macro lens. So the remark must be Sony ‘boiler plate’ and not a specific lens warning.

Some zoom lenses tend to show some degree of vignetting at their widest angle. I had a Nikon 18-140 on my D7200, and at 18mm it did show a tiny bit of vignetting. It quickly disappeared as the lens was zoomed. I haven't found any vignetting with the Sony 18-135 lens. I think it's a fine lens. The fact that Sony is using it as a kit lens says something about it, especially since apparently they've dropped the 16-50 and 55-210 lenses as kit lenses.

I use the 18-135, and I really like it. No vignetting, at least none that I can see.
Glad that I bought it, it is a great lens with a very useful range, and sharp with good contrast.
