Beautiful cactus and shot John. I visited a garden with lots of them, backed up to take a shot and got stabbed many times!! Pulling spikes from rear end and legs on the walk back to the hotel.

If I were a bug I'd hide in there, like a fortress to it's enemies. Now imagine all the fallen thorns in the ground around these things. I went to pull weeds around one to get a better shot and they had fallen off and were in and on top of the weeds!

Yes--I accidentally barely bumped a taller variety and it took about five minutes to extract the needles. They were little fine ones.
