Close portraits of people? Naturally.
Scenics or news "reporting" - landscape.....
I suppose since <D>SLRs are designed for "landscape", no one uses portrait?
I hold my phone horizontal with absolutely no awkwardness.
And hold my DSLR in portrait when desired for the composition.

I never thought of a rectangular format camera as either portrait or landscape by design, but by convention even though these sound similar. I recall some older cameras with two shutter releases. Do you find that people who think about composition will rotate a phone without hesitation when needed? On the other hand, it surprises me how some very casual snap shooters are not aware of how just a little effort to pre-visualize can improve their photos. Several times when asked to take a couple’s or family’s tourist picture they thanked me for the extra few seconds to make a decent one, or snap off several from which to pick. I like to think they gave more thought to their own pictures later on.

Na, I just dislike them and think they are idiots.
We need imperfect idiots in the world to make perfect idiots feel good.

(I did that for a couple inside a colonial building in Philly one time. I composed so they were well placed and they could see and identify the background where they visited.)

One problem many of them encounter is when posting on social media, they don't know how to rotate so they only use native orientation.

I disagree that they are idiots. There is a logical reason for all of this. People shoot vertically-oriented videos on their smartphones to share with others who will view the videos on their smartphones. And by design, smartphones are a bit easier and more comfortable to operate in vertical position than in horizontal position. Particularly when it comes to swiping from one screen to the next. Of course some of these videos will end up viewed on a horizontal screen monitor (for example, when uploaded to Youtube), but generally they are intended for viewing on a smartphone held vertically.

Please go back and re-read my comment to the quote:

Me too!
(although “despise” is kind of a strong word which I generally reserve for the cretins who insist on having loud, private conversations on their cell phones in public places😊)

My comment was regarding people who talk loudly on the phone in public, not people who use cell phone cameras.

PLEASE don't put words in my mouth or misquote me!
