Close portraits of people? Naturally.
Scenics or news "reporting" - landscape.....
I suppose since <D>SLRs are designed for "landscape", no one uses portrait?
I hold my phone horizontal with absolutely no awkwardness.
And hold my DSLR in portrait when desired for the composition.
I never thought of a rectangular format camera as either portrait or landscape by design, but by convention even though these sound similar. I recall some older cameras with two shutter releases. Do you find that people who think about composition will rotate a phone without hesitation when needed? On the other hand, it surprises me how some very casual snap shooters are not aware of how just a little effort to pre-visualize can improve their photos. Several times when asked to take a couple’s or family’s tourist picture they thanked me for the extra few seconds to make a decent one, or snap off several from which to pick. I like to think they gave more thought to their own pictures later on.
