I remember driving that road in the 50's and it was hairy. You crawled behind the big rigs and they chased you down the other side.

Thank you for the comment For tBragg Guy; that was a little before my time. Wasn't that the only way to North Lake Tahoe and Reno before they built I-80?

Yes, it was the only direct way to go from Reno to Sacramento and Truckee where the road to Tahoe was.

I'm glad you enjoyed them. I hesitated posting them because the quality isn't the greatest, but I thought they would be of interest due to their uniqueness.

I was looking at the photos of Donner Summit posted by RE on May 12 (I'm a little behind on the Hog). It reminded me of an event I worked on there in August 1967. In that time frame, I was working on the timing crew at Northern California sports car races, both amateur and professional. There was a hill climb up about the last 2 1/2 miles of the Donner Pass highway. They blocked off the highway and sent cars up individually, using automated timing to see who was fastest. I worked as a flagman at the event, sitting on a large rock above the highway with my flags in case there was a problem on the course. The cars returned to the starting line using I-80. I'm sure a lot of drivers on I-80 were surprised to see racing cars (especially the open wheel type) on the highway. It was a great way to spend a nice summer day.

Here are some photos, most from my flag station. Note that there are chicanes made with hay bales to keep the speeds down somewhat. The photos aren't very good quality, but I think many of you will find them interesting. I took them as color slides with a fixed lens rangefinder Minolta and scanned them as JPEGs with no post processing. I'll have to dig them out, re-scan at higher quality and then post process them at some point when my life slows down some. Comments are welcome.

Thank you for posting them, I ran several back in the 60s and 70s, also tried qualifying for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb a couple times but didn't qualify, that was when it was pavement halfway up and then dirt to the top, trying to figure out what kind of tires for both surfaces was the killer....I always guessed wrong!! LOL

Yes it is; that was the only year they made the split window, the first year of the Stingray. Thank you for looking and commenting.

I'm glad you liked them. Pikes Peak looks too scary for me! With the kind of drop-offs at Pikes Peak, I would want substantial guard rails.

Yes, it was a hoot, pretty scary on those hairpin turns, sliding around at speed and hoping you didn't/wouldn't slide off the end for a long drop!!

I'm glad I was able to confirm your memories. They were good times. I also have photos from a formula car race held in South Lake Tahoe in October 1967. I worked on the timing crew at that race.
