Very nice. #2 is outstanding.

Thanks very much, kpmac. I’ve reposted #1 after reprocessing it because I had obviously over processed the original posted image (soft, loss of focus). #2 is still superior (composition, color, sharpness) but #1 is unique in having the interaction between the two birds. You might take a look. Anyway, it’s always good to hear from you. Thanks again.

Bells,

Thank you. That is so nice of you. All wildlife photos involve a certain amount of luck, but I’m happy you found this shot spectacular.

This small finch like bird was originally called the Nutmeg Manikin. Recently renamed "Scaley-breasted Munia," this exotic species originated in Southeast Asia but has established a viable population in Southern California. A smaller population had found its way to Houston, TX. They seem to populate stream beds and ponds where reeds and grasses are plentiful. They only grow to about 4-1/2" in length and have very quiet calls.

These shots was taken on an overcast day, handheld, with a Nikon D500 and Nikkor 200-500mm telezoom. The birds were part of a larger group discovered yesterday morning at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Orange County.

That’s nice to hear. Thanks for the kind words. I’ve viewed many of your beautiful wildlife photos from India and hope you will continue sharing them with us frequently. I would be interested in knowing whether this species is considered detrimental in any way in its native environment. The populations seems to be growing fairly quickly here, and we worry sometimes when new species begin to compete for food and breeding space with native species. I’m just curious whether this is a species that will fit into our ecosystem or if it’s knows for pushing out other species. Thanks again, and keep posting. jak

Blair,

That’s very high praise. Thanks very much. I may print it for the wall. As for the first photo, which was definitely lower quality and photographically inferior, I did go back and reprocess it, applying less noise reduction, and I think it improved it quite a bit. If you scroll back up through this message chain, you will find it posted. It still doesn’t compete with the second image, but I think it is much improved.

Have a great week, and thanks again for viewing and commenting.
