Can someone explain the recent trend toward "selfies"? Are people afraid to hand their cameras or phones to a stranger and ask for a photograph when they want to be photographed with another person or in front of a landmark? I have never had someone try to run off with my camera.
It's a craze.

It's not new...just more convenient.
I like what Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County) dubbed them...Narcissisties.
Personally, I usually prefer the output of a selfie vs asking a complete stranger to take a picture.
Only exceptions are when I see someone that based on their camera, posture, aprox composition they are taking, I see they have at least a little idea of what they are doing.
In any other case, I would end up with a picture where the landmark is not visible or just covered by us (because the photographer centered us on the frame).
Finally, when I choose a selfie, is just a quick record of "we were here" or "hi family and friends, look where we are". So the selfie is a good option :)
Usually allows to combine a close headshot with the landmark in the background
It may look like a craze, but I don't believe it is. Rather, it is just an extension of the nature of social media. Is social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) nothing more than a craze? I think this will be with us for quite some time, in some form or another, and so will selfies, which are linked to social media.
Personally, I don't do selfies. But I also don't do social media. Yet even as a non-participant, it's not that difficult to observe what's going on in that realm, and see why selfies are such an integral part of it.

Well people have done selfie with film camera but today's cell phone with front facing camera and camera with swivel LCD make selfie a lot easier to do.
People want to do selfie because the want to do a lot of and asking others to take their pictures that many times isn't easy. They also want it because they can frame it the way they want it and see their pose/expression before taking the pictures.
If you visit Rome Italy your thoughts may change about handing over your camera to someone you don’t know. Back up a lot more ...
I used a tripod and the timer of my FM to take hundreds of "selfies" in the '80's, as where I was travelling, there were no people, and sometimes, the composition was better if a person would be in the photo. Still use the same technique today with my D750. Also, so far, I have only taken 1 "selfie" with my smartphone.
People, including myself, have been taking selfies for years, but with cell phone cameras, they are much more common. Because of that, we needed a name: selfie.

... don't forget these cell phones have a plastic face mode, and the distorted effect of the "selfie" makes the person an instant celebrity...
Today is seems people require a dream like projection of themselves, with features and reality nearly unrecognizable... so someone taking an actual photograph is defiantly out of the question for most.
