I sold a print and they took to store to find a frame. Then decided to have them make a wood grained photo on wood. The store which i think is Michaels wants my digital copy to do this. What do I need to do or not do..

I would consider selling them a "one time print copyright for a digital file for a digital print on wood". I would not charge them as much as the original print. I would charge them half the price the price of the original or negotiate a price between 100% to 0% of the original print price of the print. Even though you may not be a professional, they thought enough of your print to buy it the first time. Now you need to determine how much it is worth for a second one. If they are friends or acquaintances, you might want to consider 50% to 0% of the price of the original print.

Ask your client specifically what they want. Quote them a price (after checking your cost to get it done) and tell them they can then take the new print any where they want to get it framed.

You didn't give them a digital copy to get the first print done. Why give it up now?

Holding the digital file is like holding the negative.

👍😁 Exactly. Offer all the currently available finishes. Get artists discounts at suppliers and labs. You keep control over the image quality and copyright. You mark up products and services for profit. You are entitled to profit from your expertise and supervision of all finishing procedures. That's what professional labs and related services are for. Deliver a finished product that is up to your standards. You can do this with traditional custom framing too. There are many wholesalers who will be pleased to accommodate you.

When you provide the file specify is a separate document file ON YOUR FLASH DRIVE and in printed form that the file is licensed for a single use basis for the purpose of a single image transfer application. ALL rights are reserved by the Photographer. Future uses of the file or image must be granted by the photographer.

I would also request return of the drive.

While this will not prevent theft or illegal re-use, it will avoid any misunderstandings--which is what I suspect you are reporting. It would also release Michaels to print the photo.

A friend of mine took a photo to Michael's to be framed. They also asked for a copy. She signed for the work to be done. Later she went back to Michael's and there were several prints of her photo for sale that had been digitally enhanced(photoshop). Ironically I saw that beautiful photo online and showed her, not knowing it was her photo. She told me what happened. I asked her if she sued or had recourse? She said she tried but when she signed to have Michaels do the work, the receipt said in fine print that Michaels reserves the rights to modify, alter and sell said prints. I have now seen that same photo for sale in Bed, Bath and Beyond and Walmart! She got zero money for the photo. She showed me a copy of the original on her cell phone so I could see it was legit. Sickening!!!

This is why we need to READ EVERYTHING BEFORE SIGNING. Unfortunately, we usually do not.

I bet an atty could still Sue. Trickery is a sad and unfair practice, by printing something so small it's hard to see or read without a magnifying glass.....I have they do this...... That's why we should only use trusted print shops, and not a do all sell all place.....
