Hello all,

My theoretical question to you is this. If you were going to Rome Italy on a trip and wanted to spend some time in the Vatican, would you spend $500 for this tour.

You meet the tour operator at 6:00 a.m. in front of the Vatican. You along with only 20 people take a tour the follows the "authorized key holder of the Vatican Keys" as he opens the doors to the museums and turns on the lights. This part of the tour takes about a half hour. You get to spend about 15 minutes in the Sistine Chapel with only 20 people present. Photography allowed as you do this tour.

Otherwise, take the $125 tour with no photography allowed in the Sistine Chapel along with 2,000 of your closest tour friends.

It all comes down to wether or not $500.00 fits into ones discretionary budget. It’s at the very high end for me but yes I would do it. Just to good an opportunity to pass up.

Hmmmmm
Does it fit your budget? Will this be something you will do again at some point or a 'once in a lifetime
event'? Do you like LARGE masses of tourists?
Good luck and have a great time.

Being of the Baptist faith I have little interest and would hold off for the History Channel version. However, I can see why many would like to take the private tour. They do know how to get into your pocket, $10,000 for doing a private walk through is quite a profit!

How important would photos of the chapel be to you?

Figure $375/# of photos = cost per photo.

Two years ago, when my wife and i went to Italy, my son bought a private tour guide of the Vatican. I believe it was in the $500 range. It was not quite how you explained your tour. But It was just the two of us on the tour. It was a great experience for the two of us. Otherwise we would have been part of a very large tour group. Her English was very good and we were able to ask questions and get good info from her. Though we were in Rome for only three days before moving on to Florence. It was a very good time.

We bought regular tickets on the internet prior to our trip. That allowed us to walk right in rather than wait in a long line at the ticket window. We then opted for the "audio vox" for our tour. Yes there are crowds but I was able to take the pictures I wanted without a problem. You might get a little more information with a special tour but you move on their schedule. On your own you can move on your schedule. Yes, the Sistine Chapel is a zoo and pictures are not allowed. On the other hand it is not as large as you might think and dark. Unless you are bringing an ultra wide lens, tripod, and lights, you might be disappointed in the results. A less expensive option is buy a book.

It’s been years since we went, but there was no charge. Unless things have changed (they may have), the Cathedral is open like any Catholic Church. We went down to the catacombs, up on the roof and “balcony” via the very narrow stairway, and visited the small shop run by the nuns there on our own- not part of a tour, although the Vatican does have staff there. The Sistine Chapel is only open certain hours, so check the schedule. We went in late June/early July, and it was not that crowded.

Two things to remember: Rome is HOT in the summer, and unlike the rest of Rome, many of the nuns and priests at the Vatican don’t speak English.

Not a chance.

Soon they’ll be selling indulgences again.

I think I’d be more interested in becoming the tour guide. As someone else pointed out, $10,000 is a pretty good take😊
It sounds like the selling point is the photo op, so if this rings your bell, go for it. $500 would be prohibitive for me. I’d rather spend it on a few things, not just one.

Hello all, br br My theoretical question to you i... (show quote)

Would I, not no, but he'll no..... That guide takes in $10,000 per tour. For that price it better be a very good your......

But I'm not you. If you have $500 to burn for a, maybe, once in a lifetime chance, them do it.... Only you can make that decision.... Will there be enough light to get good handheld shots. If not, maybe the cheaper your would be a better choice. If not enough light, will you be able to carry a tripod.....

Good luck and enjoy...... And if you get some good shots..... Share them here.....

Safe travels.....
