Got back to the lake for some Osprey action. I promised myself not to miss the nesting season this year. I purchased the D850 about 6 months ago and other than running it past the owls in flight I've never really ran it through the a full blown work out. I did take it to Costa Rica and it was sort of a mistake. I got some great photos, but I had to many misses. Low light, tight quarters and other obstacles to say the least. Trying to learn a new camera while on vacation is a no brainer, Don't Do It...... What I quickly learned is the difference in the custom setting modes. You cannot set this camera up like I had the D600, or D7200. A totally different beast. That said, I went out the last two Saturdays and am happy to say I have worked My Bugs out, not the camera's. 90% of the time when a camera fails, it's normally User Related.. Here are a few of the keepers....

Clearly you have the "bugs" worked out because those are magnificent shots! What lens did you use, and how far away from the nest were you located?

I used the Nikon 80-400mm lens. Your fairly close, just enough not to spook them. If you run up to them they will simply peel off the tree branch away from you leaving you with a butt shot. They nest in trees that are 5 ft. to 20ft. high. The lake gets boat traffic from fisherman and they always fish up under the trees. It's not uncommon to be drifting around looking for a bird when you look up and see that you are directly under one and they are just watching you pass under. If you spook them, then no shot, just drift around and thru the trees and you get plenty of action....
