The alphabet is made up of symbols representing actual things like man, woman, etc. Then these symbols are associated in the overall symbol with tree, food, etc. allowing a thought to be written and be read. I forget just how many of these symbols make up the Chinese alphabet but there are many!
And that's why I could never learn Chinese--the memory required is way beyond my limit.
