This humpback whale spent nearly three weeks in Alameda lagoons near the aircraft carrier Hornet, feeding and putting on spectacular shows. Most of my shots and that of others (all from shore) were from hundreds of yards away, but the whale suddenly breeched right in front of me, less than 30 yards away. Would have got splashed except I was pretty high above the water. Was lucky to be at only 70mm focal length and ready!

Yesterday she left Alameda, hopefully for her normal feeding grounds in the ocean.

Yes, excellent. But what are all those white ring tatoos on the snout end?

Fabulous shots!

Once in a lifetime opportunity to have a whale so close for almost three weeks. I can tell you many in our town were moved by the experience. Alas Allie the whale has departed Alameda waters, hopefully to join other humpbacks in the ocean.

Possibly skin reaction to barnacles.

The first photo is spectacular, not to say that the others are not very good. Nothing like being at the right place at the right time!

Lucky capture though being prepared was essential. The whale breached directly in front of me and very close, completely without warning, and outside of a more typical "show."

Thanks. Now if I can only find some space on a wall!

Spectacular!

Oh... there's always space on the ceiling, no? (I'd put it right above my bed.)
