My wife and I will be taking a river cruise from Bucarest to Budapest in October with a couple of days in Transylvania. Any suggestions for interesting places to photo?

There are so many, at times, while on the water the castles, in the cities, the cathedrals, the monuments etc. They will show themselves to you at every turn.

Are you spending the night in Budapest or is it just a day stop? You should definitely see the Shoes on the Danube Memorial. What do you like to photograph?

Take an in-town tour if part of your ships package or if you have the time. Budapest is phenomenal; so many things to photograph. Get a book on city or go on-line to see all the things and places available for a tourist to photograph. btw, the shoes are moving to the soul and remind one that this river ran red with blood during the WWll occupation. I will start my September bicycle tour there. The second time, but hopefully not the last, I will see this magnificent city. The cCastle and Parliament building are among the most beautiful in Europe. Don’t forget the brightly colored trains, either.

If you are arriving in Budapest at night, all the buildings along the river will be lit up. It is a golden sight. Don’t miss the public market.

I went out during the night - no one around - and got great shots of the castle and the bridge across the river in Pest. The trip is a photographers dream from Budapest to Prague.

In Budapest see the Fisherman's Bastion on the Pest Side of the river. Also tour the Parliament Building in the Buda side. And not to miss, although not as popular, is the Museum of Murder. It is where the Nazis, then the Soviets, jailed and tortured opponents and suspects. It also includes lots of historical stuff from those eras. It is truly eye-opening.

In Bucharest definitely go through the old town and also tour their Parliament Building. It was built by Ceausescu, the Communist dictator as his home and headquarters. It is unbelievably lavish inside, marble and beautifully carved wood. The exterior looks as oppressive as his regime. He had five other homes spread across the country, but they no longer have public access. And, if you have time, go to Pele Castle in Transylvania.

The KGB museum called the House of Terror in Budapest is outstanding, particularly if you're old enough to remember the cold war. You'll come away with mixed feelings but historically enlightened.

I woud recommend a trip to the Mall in Pest. It has some amazing places to take picture of. As noted from everyone else there are so many places to photograph you could spend a month there just doing that.

We went the same time of year, our trip started in Bucharest on Oct 12th, 2014. We traveled with Grand Circle. Took the pre-trip to Transylvania. The air is so clean and pure, your pics will be wonderful. Ancient tall pine forests, Dram and Pelet Castles and their beautiful grounds. If you can visit Brasov on Sunday, they have a wonderful food truck feast in the town center. Beautiful architecture all over Romania. Boarded our river ship in Constanta, ancient ruins and fabulous museums & Orthodox churches with amazing frescoes! The trees on the Danube banks we’re changing colors. The great locks system, carvings in the rock cliffs and many interesting cities along the way. You will learn the Communist history of each country along the River. Wonderful fortress ruins in several countries. Charming villages and more churches and frescoes. And then, the crown jewel of St Stephen in Budapest!!! The night lighting looks like Buda is a movie set. Heroes Park is with a day. Visit the architectural park built for the Millennium showing the history of architectural buildings through the 1000 year history of Hungary. Also the thermal baths are splendid, particularly as the sun goes down. It snowed while we were in the outdoor pools!!! If you can attend a music concert in St Stephen’s Cathedral on the Pest side in the evening, it is perfect for photography as the church is fully light and is a gem. Climbing the church tower during the day provides wonderful 360 degree views of this beautiful area. Also the Great Food Halls is a fantastic photo op for both food and crafts and a great place to buy sausage, cheese, bread, nuts, etc for a picnic meal! We went 3 days early to Bucharest, spent 3 or 4 days in Transylvania, 12 days on the Danube River Cruise, stayed on our own in Budapest for 4 more days after the river cruise was over and then took a train to Prague for a week also on our own. We had never been to Eastern Europe before and really loved this trip. Days are getting short at this time of year so be prepared for low light photography. Many churches and museums do not allow the use of a flash. I travel with two lenses but use my 70-200 most of the time. I find it to be a perfect travel lens! Hope all that info helps!!!

My wife and I just returned from the same cruise, a week ago, in the reverse direction: 4 days in Transylvania then cruise Bucharest to Budapest. Don't miss:

The Rock Statue of Decbelus on the Danube.
Sighisora, Romania (medieval town)
Bran Castle, Romania
Prejmer Church Fortress, Romania
Old Town section of Brasov, Romania
Budapest (view from Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side of the city, overlooking the Hungarian Parliament).
Belgrade is interesting too.

If you get the chance, spend some time walking through the town of Vukovar, Croatia. You can still see a lot of evidence of the war they had there in the 90's.

Of course you can Google all these sites for more info. Enjoy the trip!
