I have just gotten back into photography after a few years' on the sidelines.
Have a Nikon D750 and a D300S, plus assorted Nikon lenses. I date back to Nikon F2s and Nikkormats.
I have Photoshop Elements 10 on my six-year-old iMac.
Elements 10 won't process RAW files. What would be the simplest RAW-processing software download that would run on my Mac OS X 10.11.6 computer, please?
Use the free software that came with the camera is one way, save or export in a format compatible with old elements. Or upgrade elements or jump to Adobe creative cloud for $10 a month.
try your "Photos" app that is already on your Mac. It does an adequate job, but that depends on how deep you go during post-processing. There are numerous good programs out there. Do a search on this site for RAW processing, lots of threads to view.
There really is no "simple" software, any program you get will have a learning curve. Many people use Elements. Did you update the raw file imports on your PS to catch up with today's cameras? The one program I don't like it the Apple Photos program, although I use it for snapshots I might take. For a higher degree of control another program would be better. You might try Luminar as it seems to be targeted for ease of use. It's a good software program with a lot of range. I'm an LR/PS user but I also use other software as needed.
If you are comfortable using PS Elements, why not just upgrade to Elements 19 (or 18, if you can find a copy)?
My advice is always pretty much the same: Purchase Affinity Photo ($49 - what can you lose?) Get a super photo processing app and give Adobe a well-deserved kick in the butt.
Affinity is on sale for $39.

I am pretty sure there is and add on that should go back to elements 10 which will let you process raw nikon files. However, someone already mention using the software. I recommend view nx2 over nikon's newer offering of nx d and another piece that goes with it. Nikon lost the rights to view NX2 it was written buy another company and they went into dispute over royalties. So nikon droped it. That said View NX2 is still available. given you have a D300s, if you have the disk that came with it it prolly has view nx2 on it. anyways, good luck.
Your Mac has an app named Preview. In mine, I have been able to open RAW image files and then save them as TIFFs or other formats. Another option is to convert the RAW in Adobe’s DNG (digital negative, I guess). But DNG comes in different versions because each camera company creates their own RAW file format, which sometimes is different for different models. For example, my first ARWs came from my Sony a6000 and DNG 4.6 converted them, but the ARWs from my Sony a6300 could not be converted and there was no higher version of DNG available.
What causes this RAW problem is that there is no standard raw file format. UHH as an organization of over 70,000 members worldwide might consider launching a call for standardizing the raw format. UHH has muscle, lets use it.

Why do you say that Adobe deserves a kick in the butt? They provide a set of products that has become the standard by which all other programs are judged. They have a successful business model which you may or may not like. And they provide updates to keep up with the current trends in hardware. I endorse their subscription service and have spent far less on their subscription service than I did buying new products from Adobe as they came out. You have a choice to either use their subscription service or not but to say they deserve a kick in the butt is a little harsh IMHO.
You're welcome to your HO, but I find Adobe's attitude toward their customers an abomination of the first order. There was a time when I, too, could praise both their products and their service. No more!
I bought Affinity solely to process the RAW images from my pocket camera, the TZ-80. It does that well. Now....with my new iMac, I'm using Affinity is my primary photo processing software. I'm more than pleased with it. I recommend you consider it for RAW processing of your camera.
