Looking at external drives for storing my photos, any suggestions for which brand and where to purchase at best price?

HGST/WD Ultrastar (enterprise class drive). You can certainly get cheaper drives, but you get what you pay for, and data is precious. You said SSD in your title, and I am all for everything on SSD, but 4TB of SSD is going to be kinda pricey.

Are you set on a 4TB SSD?
I just looked that product up, hadn't seen that one, the product did talk about rotational speed, is that solid state?
well 3 would probably do.
actually 2 might even do, but definitely more than 1 TB.
not apple, well I do have an iPhone.

Are you talking to me? The link I sent you does not talk about rotational speed.Rotational speed is not SSD.
The link I sent specs are;
4TB Capacity
2 x Thunderbolt 3 Ports
Read/Write Speeds up to 2800 MB/s

I want to get ALL the kids pictures in one place so I can make some shutterfly books...Plus I take wildlife photos. I need room to move around and thinking towards the future. I found Staples doesn't even carry one! I just looked to get an idea of cost.
I have not found a 4tb one yet, except the model you mentioned, but the 1tb and 2 tb ones are very pricey, you are correct about that! Pricier than I expected.

SSD fail also. It is generally thought that mechanical Hard Disk Drives (HDD), is more reliable in the long run with reads/writes, as a SSD has a maximum number of writes that it can handle. However, SSDs are more reliable with shock damage because they contain no moving parts.

I have two Western Digital My Passport Ultras as externals. Granted mine are only 1Tb, but they both are a few years old. Nice and small for traveling using one as a backup for the laptop. I can't see spending that much money on a large SSD.
Ah, now I have viewed it, that is more the price I was looking for, thank you.
