Came across this strange scene on a walk out. These Spiderlings were in a tight ball (slightly larger than a Tennis Ball), as soon as I bent down for a closer look they started to disperse. Some wise soul told me (facebook) that they were common Garden spiders, and that their dispersal was a defensive measure.

Great shots. If my wife saw that she would be in the next county and still accelerating.

I did.., once.., in the house.
Got a spider in the breakfast nook one time and a two or three dozen little ones on her back scrambled and try to scatter.

The other day my wife came to me in a panic. There was a black and white ringed snake on our driveway and making it's way into our yard in a flash. I was not concerned, knowing it was not poisonous. Turned out to be a common Arizona King Snake. I had more important things to do than to worry about it. I had to water the garden. It gets real hot here, already 105 F. But could not convince her it was harmless and that it would eat the mice. So she took care of it. Funny what happens when one ignores it.

Here's an article about the emergence of these Garden Spiders in Great Britain that occurs each spring. They are harmless and beneficial because they eat many unwanted insects.

Paul, Your Wife "Took care of it"...would that be a gentle 'shooing' away or a good 'whack' with a Garden spade?...lol.

I should have scooped them up sippyjug, and brought them home for my Wife telling her "they are harmless and beneficial"..I wonder how long and how piercing the scream would have been..Ha Ha.
