Is it possible for an 18-55mm lens to capture a beautiful full moon?
Yes, but it will be a tiny dot in the frame.

Try it, the moon will be very small in the picture.
If there’s a large moon just rising you’ll have better luck than if it’s up in the sky.
Yes, but you really need a good telephoto lens. You will lose resolution if you crop to make the image large.

Actually, that's not true. A large moon on the horizon is an optical illusion. You might not believe me but try it. Your eyes lie to you but the camera won't. Take a photo on the horizon and another one higher in the sky with the same focal length, they will be the same size image.
Optical illusion. Whether at the horizon or high in sky, the moon is about 0.5 degree wide.

While it would be possible to take a image of the moon with a 18-55mm lens, the better question would be why do you want to. This is what the moon looks like using a 500mm lens, now imagine what it will look like at 55mm which would be almost 10 times smaller

Yup! I estimate that the at 55mm the moon diameter will be 1/60 of the frame.
That "large rising moon" is an optical illusion, which probably won't influence your camera. Also, you'll be shooting through a thousand miles of additional atmosphere versus overhead-ish. runnyblood

Compare a pin head to Stone Mt near Atlanta, GA.
I really need a higher lens then. Thanks for the answers. :)
I take moon shots with old manual focus, prime, telephoto lenses on digital cameras. The attached photo is a very heavy crop taken with an Olympus OM-D-E-M5 micro 4/3 camera with a 40+ year old Vivitar 400mm f6.3 lens. I think the lens was made byTokina. With patience, 400mm MF lenses can be purchased for $40 or less on ebay. Shoot aperture preferred or manual exposure at ~f11 on a good tripod. DrJ
