Juvenile white tailed kites

Right behind my house! I tried to get closer but they began grumbling to each other and took off fairly quickly, before I could get my best focus! But what beautiful birds! The juveniles have a rusty belly; these kites hover in the sky sighting prey.

Sorry I didn’t mention that I live in Goleta, California, next to a nature preserve. This kite family nested in the eucalyptus grove behind our house and they hunt at sundown for prey, hovering behind the house. Goleta is ten miles north of Santa Barbara....we have many wonderful birding areas but this is particularly special because of the proximity to my house!

Very nice photos! They are interesting hunters and make good neighbors, lucky you. I wish them successful lives. Hope you show us more of them.

Will do! I can see them high up on top of the eucalyptus right now....too far away for photography but identifiable with the binoculars! I’ll post more pics when I can. White tailed kites and kestrels are my favorite raptors!
