Anybody know the names of good nature preserves on the island for pictures. Birds, I know, will be there, and what else?

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is just before the entrance to the island on US 278. It is a great place for birds, particularly the rookery on Ibis Pond. There is also a good butterfly garden next to Ibis Pond. The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn has a butterfly area and some good photo ops. On the road just after coming onto the island using the toll bridge there is a large Audubon Park on the right.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge would be closest, Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is about one hour away, Hunting Island State Park, SC is about 1 1/2 hour away, part of Ace Basin National Wildlife Refuge about 1 1/2 hour and Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge about 2 hours. Enjoy your stay

By the way, I’ve been coming here for 34 years every year. We have a timeshare. Wherever you go please watch out for alligators. We have three in the lagoon behind us this year. A 6’ 8’ and 10’ The walk to Ibis pond is 1 1/2 miles round trip from parking lot

I would highly recommend the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. It's more off the beaten path (in Sea Pines). Unpaved roads to drive on... Also, Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is well worth the trip:

as is Savannah itself (for a different type of wildlife ;-) ).

Been vacationing there for decades. Can't add to what is here, except don't forget the seashore and the marsh - eateries along the marsh give good twilight views. One of my son's best was a "middle of dinner do you see that?" shot.
