My son's Dell just keeps on truckin', my HP regularly shuts itself down or "hangs" in the middle of my work, losing my work. (My wife's does the same!)

I used to process my photos in LR and use a laptop to do it. The only problem I had was with the size of the screen. I bought a larger monitor, connected it to the laptop and my enjoyment level went way up. Here is another thing to give thought to ... AI is working it's way into photo processing and as of now, requires some hefty computing ability. Check TOPAZ AI products to see what I mean. If your laptop has what it takes to work with AI, you're all set ... if not then give the situation some thought. So / monitor and processing power. BTW, I recently bought a desktop computer with all of the processing power needed and now I use that to do the Topaz stuff ... I still do the LR processing on the laptop - habit. My desktop has all of my photos but I also have them on an SSD external drive and that is how I get them to the laptop.

Baysitter,

You already have a dozen posts! I'm in the same spot. My 6 year old, daily use laptop has a dead D:\ drive. So I'm forced to shop for a new one too.

I found a laptop that meets your criteria at Costco this week. Costco has an extended return time if you don't like it and an extend warranty. The clerk at Costco says it is a "new item". I tried to find the same model online at other sources and it is marked as "new with shipments coming", so I can't find any reviews.

Everything about it suggests it is fast and capable. It has two "faults". The RAM is 16GB and there is no SD card slot so you have to use a SD card reader. Since I have several, it is not a problem for me.

I am a Costco member. I will take a look. Thank you. This does look promising.

I am about to lose my travel laptop. Old, like me. I have searched here on the Hog for suggestions. They seem to be dated and as technology moves forward so quickly, I decided to ask this amazingly informative group for suggestions. I use LR and have a desktop (PC) for my post processing and I want to fully work on my photos when we are wintering elsewhere. My budget would be about $1300. I have been looking at Alienware by Dell and Lenovo Legion y520. I would like 32 GB ram, 512 SSD and 1-2 T HD i7core. But graphics card and such, I would like advice. I have looked at some of the sites suggested for “make your own photography laptop” but they are so expensive. And I am not sure I need it all. I will be switching to the Adobe subscript LR/PS when this is purchased. Should I get an external HD to put catalog and photos on to for transfer to home PC? Thank you ahead of time for your assistance. BTW, I travel to a lot of the National Parks and carry a Nikon D750 with some good glass.

You should be able to find a good Dell laptop in that price range. Just do a search, or if you are a Costco member look there. They double the Dell warranty so that's why I used Costco.

Whenever I need a new laptop I go to my local computer store (not a big box store). I tell them what I'm using the computer for (primarily photo processing); they ask some questions (no, I'm not a gamer!) and they recommend a number of lap tops that will meet my need. It is the only way I now buy a lap top.

Be sure to get Windows 10 PRO, not Home. Also, I prefer ACER rather than a mainland Chinese computer. My ACER is 6-core, i7, 32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 1 TB HD, 17.3" display, etc. It cost $1800 and I am very happy with it. I have a Lenovo laptop and ASUS. By far and away, the ACER does the job and the display calibrates nicely to the sRGB gamut. The Lenovo was only about 80%. Carefully check out the capability of the display to be able to match the sRGB gamut since you want to process photos.

This is a decent deal on a good machine. My only question is to whether there are any open DRAM slots so that you can increase the DRAM to 32 GB eventually - you should be able to find this out from Lenovo. BTW, the only reason I can think that Windows 10 Pro (vs Home) would be worth paying for is the ability to defer updates, and there are other ways to do that with the Home version if you feel the need. If someone else knows why any of the other additional features of the Pro version are worth paying for with a home machine, I’m all ears.
