They have all that time underground to think about how to modify themselves for the next above ground display. I gained respect for Mushrooms when watching the Rod Steiger movie [one part of the Illustrated Man] where they crash-landed on a planet where only Fungi grew... rapidly.
This design in your photo is flower-like with offset rows of petals; indeed unique.

It is beautiful but I'll bet it ain't among the edible kind.
I have never seen one like it and I have a degree in Botany. Nice shot. I have seen them become split and flower-like at maturity and I have seen a few that look like other flowers but none like that.
