My wife and I will be traveling to the Philippines this November 2019.
Are the any suggestions for photography (and other items) in Manila and the island of Puerto Princesa?
Thanks in advance.

I grew up in Manila and received my secondary and college education there, as well. I have never been to the Puerto Princesa nor the other nearby fascinating islands (e.g., Bohol - chocolate hills, Cebu the birthplace of Christianity, etc.) but know of several my countrymen who live and enjoy life there. It's been years since I left the Phil and migrated to the US so can't tell you much about Puerto Princesa. The province where Puerto Princesa is located is called, Palawan. It is really not a Muslin country but it's not that far from Mindanao where Muslims predominate and a faction of the Taliban exists.

As with the other big cities including Paris, NY, etc., take all the necessary precautions during your stay in Manila. Pick pockets are all over. Don't wear fine jewelries including wristwatch as you just become a target for the muggers. If you resist, they'll stab you. If they insist, don't resist. This was true then and still true today. Having said that, Filipinos are generally friendly and very hospitable people especially to the Americans.

I hope you're traveling with a traveling agency that provides tour guide. Manila is rich in history (religious, military, cultural, etc.) worth taking pictures especially those places related to the American battle against the Japs during WWII such as Corregidor Island (Manila Bay). If you have time, another place with American connection is Subic Naval Bay. This was used for R&R by the Americans during the Vietnam War. It is not in Manila but about 3 hours drive by car.

Another place with American connection is Clark Air Force Base in Angeles, Pampanga, about 2 hours away by car. It was also involved during the Vietnam War. Mt. Pinatubo is located nearby.

If you have more time, Bataan Death March is another place with American involvement during WWII. This is where approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make an arduous 65-mile march to prison. During the march the captives were beaten, shot, bayoneted, and, in many cases, beheaded. A large number of those who made it to the camp later died of starvation and disease.

An earlier post by UHH, Loren, lives in Baguio City, north of Manila. I have been there few times with some friends. Loren is lucky living there as far as temperature is concerned. It is dubbed the "Summer Capital" of the Philippines. He found the "Goldilock Zone" - temperature is just right - not too hot and not too cold. Actually, I would even categorize the type of weather as "perfect." No wonder Loren loves it there.

I am sure you'll have a lot of "must-see" places in Manila alone to keep you busy.

Enjoy your visit to the Philippines. Be safe. I have no doubt you'll find both the people and the place, nice. Post some pictures.
